DUNNES STORES have refused permission to lower the wall that runs by the Tralee to Fenit walkway despite anti-social behaviour fears from residents nearby.

Kerry County Council have said the walkway construction will go ahead now without the lowering of the wall alongside the new walkway, which links the lower Oakpark Road with Rock Street.

Residents in the area had expressed fears that the walkway, due to the high-wall would become a haven for anti-social behaviour.

The alteration proposed would have seen the height of the wall reduced and a railing installed on the top to replace the reduced height of the wall.

The initial response from Dunnes Stores was positive to the proposal subject to a number of conditions being met. Kerry county Council addressed the conditions set out by Dunnes who indicated they were satisfied with the undertakings given.

However, when Kerry County Council asked for final confirmation that the works could proceed, Dunnes, indicated they were no longer in favour of the proposal.

Kerry County Council, have since asked Dunnes to reconsider their stance but no response was received. The council have said they have given Dunnes a considerable length of time to review their position and, with the deadline for completion fast approaching – the council say they now have no alternative other than to continue with the works without any change to the the wall.

Kerry County Council proposal + anti-social behaviour fears from Kerry County residents = Dunnes Stores, no longer in favour of the proposal.
