The origins of step dance in Kerry will be shown in a new DVD set to be launched this Friday, June 26.

FANS of the art of step dancing will want to make note of June 26 on their calendars, with the launch of a new DVD showcasing its origins in Kerry.

The film which is called ‘The Origins Of Kerry Step Dance’ will be launched at a night being hosted by local dance group ‘Rinceoirí Na Ríochta and Jimmy Smith and will take place in the Brogue Inn this coming Friday at 7pm.

The DVD will share the history of where modern Irish dance originated from through a beautiful mix of music, dance and stories that will delight all lovers of Irish dance.

We spoke to one of the organisers, Lorraine Smith, about the upcoming launch night, which she says will have a little bit of fun for all those who attend.

“There will be Irish dancing [on the night], my dad [Jimmy Smith] has taught ten world champions altogether so we’re hoping that there will be a few of them there dancing as well as Irish musicians from the old Siamsa Tire,” said Lorraine.

“There will be a few speeches too. Father Pat Ahern, who was the founder of Siamsa Tire, will be doing a little speech down there. The DVD will be there if anybody wants to buy a copy and there will a lot of other people playing music there as well,” she said.

The DVD costs €20 and will be available to buy on the night. To find out more about the DVD or to buy it online, you can do so through the website here.
