A €10,000 prize fund is being made available to artists in Kerry who create original artwork for the mortuary in University Hospital Kerry.

UHK, in conjunction with the Irish Hospice Foundation (IHF) as part of its Design & Dignity Programme (in partnership with the HSE), are offering the prize fund and are now seeking submissions from around the county.  Five winners will be chosen in early January 2020.

Funded by the Irish Hospice Foundation’s, the ‘Art & Dignity’ competition is open to students, emerging or established artists in Kerry over the age of 16 to create original artwork for the Mortuary in UHK.  Entries can be paintings, sculptures, photography, glass, murals or pieces using various other mediums.

Fearghal Grimes, UHK General Manager said; “The management team at UHK emphasised that they did not want ‘off-the-shelf’ artwork to be purchased and feel strongly it should be unique and should come from the Kerry community because they are the very people the Mortuary provides the service for”.

“Artwork can have a calming and stress reducing affect if correctly chosen, especially in highly sensitive surroundings where people are coping with the death of a family member,” says Ronan Rose Roberts who is part of the Design & Dignity Programme Advisory Group.

Significant investment has already been put in the Mortuary in UHK with recent extension, redesign and renovations.

This is the first time that the opportunity to create the artwork will be opened up to public submissions.  The winning pieces need to be appropriate for the sensitive surroundings and must be in line with the supplied brief.

People who wish to enter the competition are invited to upload their ideas/drafts/concepts at www.uhk.ie/art before the closing date of Friday, December 6, 2019.

Ten finalists will then be selected by the panel of judges to develop their concepts into real pieces for final judging in early January 2020. The winning five pieces will be chosen and the winning artists will share the €10,000 prize fund.

The Judging Panel is Ronan Rose Roberts, Architect Advisor for Design & Dignity; Catríona Fallon, Visual Arts Curator at Siamsa Tíre; Fearghal Grimes, General Manager of University Hospital Kerry; Louis Mulcahy, Artist and Founder of Louis Mulcahy Pottery and Paul Ruane, Creative Director, Midpoint Creative.
