€36,000 Allocated For Wetlands Lighting And Repairs To Lock Gates

FUNDS for the Tralee Bay Wetlands and for repairs on the Lock Gates have been allocated by the Department of Social Protection and Rural Affairs.

In all, €200,000 has been allocated for 11 Kerry outdoor recreation projects under Measure 1 of the “Outdoor Recreation and Infrastructure Scheme”

The Wetlands is to receive €20,000 towards eco lighting and €16,000 is to be spent on repairing the canal lock gates in Tralee to enhance the blueway.

The funds will be allocated as follows…

• €20,000 will go to upgrade the Ballybunion Cliff Walk.
• €20,000 is also being allocated towards lighting for Moyvane Wood Walk.
• €20,000 is going to the Asdee section of the Shannon Way Walk, with the creation of a trailhead at Asdee Village Grotto and the installation of signage and route information.
• A further €20,000 is being allocated to upgrade 4km of the Sive Bog Walk in Listowel, which links to the North Kerry Greenway.
• Tralee Bay Wetlands is to receive €20,000 towards eco lighting and €16,000 is to be spent on repairing the canal lock gates in Tralee to enhance the blueway.
• Just under €20,000 is being provided to create additional passing laybys on approach to Glenteenassig Forest Park in Aughcasla.
• Valentia Island will also receive just under €20,000 to create an 8km loop walk around Knightstown.
• Nearly €18,000 will go towards the development of two new loop walks around Kilgarvan Village, while Kerry County Council is to receive €20,000 to promote local “Iveragh Walks of the Ring” to locals and visitors with a particular emphasis on older people and accessibility.
• South Kerry Development Partnership is to receive just under €17,000 to maintain and enhance seven different established community walks in the South Kerry area, including Portmagee, Valentia, Ballinskelligs and Top of Coom.

Kerry Fine Gael TD and Deputy Government Chief Whip, Brendan Griffin, welcomed the news this morning saying the latest funding is a very welcome addition to money already invested in Kerry in recent years, including the recent announcement of a significant expansion of the Walk Scheme in Kerry, where landowners receive payment for facilitating access to their land for walking trails.

Minister Norma Foley also welcomed the news saying: “This funding will enhance and further develop a number of significant outdoor activities in the county including walking trails, blueways and a myriad of outdoor activities. It is a welcome and timely boost for amenities enjoyed by both locals and visitors alike.”
