A TRALEE woman is raising funds for Brain Tumour Ireland, a cause close to her heart.

Elaine Burrows Dillane will set off from Kent in England in early September with the aim of reaching France and thereby becoming the first Kerry woman to swim the English Channel.

As part of this record-breaking attempt, Elaine is fundraising for Brain Tumour Ireland, a cause close to her heart.

Some years ago, a close family friend of Elaine’s was diagnosed with a brain tumour as a four-year old child.

Thankfully today this child is now a grown up with a family of his own. As a result, Elaine is inspired by the work of Brain Tumour Ireland and wanted to do something to support them, particularly in the area of paediatrics.

100% of all donations to Elaine’s challenge will go directly to Brain Tumour Ireland through https://give.everydayhero.com/ie/elaine-burrows-dillane-english-channel-swim

Speaking at one of her regular training sessions Elaine said: “It has been a lifelong ambition of mine to swim the English Channel. Life’s commitments prevented me from attempting the swim sooner and therefore finding the courage and desire to do it now had to be inspired by something special.

“This something special is one, looking and admiring our own two amazing healthy children and two, the wonderful work that Brain Tumour Ireland does for young children and their families affected by life threatening brain tumours. Every length of the pool, every kilometre in the sea, every minute in the gym is the commitment I am willing to make to do my bit for a wonderful organisation.”

Ms Burrows Dillane is no stranger to daring sea swim feats, and, in the summer of 2017, she became the first woman to swim from Blennerville to Fenit and back (16k).

In 2018 she took on an even bigger challenge, accomplishing what no other woman had done before, swimming a total of 21k from Blennerville to the Maharees.

She arrived to the Maharees, having spent six hours and thirty-four minutes, non-stop, swimming without a wetsuit.

Aside from the physical and emotional challenges presented by her upcoming swim across the English Channel, there is also a financial challenge. Accordingly, there are sponsorship opportunities for individuals and companies wishing to support Elaine’s daring feat.

These include opportunities to feature on print materials, event signage, team kit and Elaine’s social media and website. All those interested in such opportunities can contact ebdchannelswim@gmail.com

Founded in 2012, Brain Tumour Ireland is a national registered charity working to inform and support brain tumour patients and their families. Brain Tumour Ireland also fundraises for brain tumour research.

The Chair of Brain Tumour Ireland, and one of its founding members, Natasha Smith said: “It is wonderful that Elain’s connection with Brain Tumour Ireland was inspired by the positive story of her family friend living well with a brain tumour, and we are so grateful to Elaine for choosing our charity to fundraise for.

“We are hugely excited about this great challenge that Elaine is taking on in the name of Brain Tumour Ireland and we wish her all the very best for her training in the coming weeks.

“The funds raised will go towards supporting the brain tumour community in Ireland.”
