UNIVERSITY Hospital Kerry has cancelled all non time-critical elective surgeries scheduled for Monday, January 13 and Tuesday, January 14.

It comes after all elective surgeries were cancelled for this week due to the high numbers presenting at the hospital with influenza.

A statement issued by the hospital this afternoon reads as follows; “University Hospital Kerry wishes to thank the public and all GPs for their assistance over the past number of days concerning the impact of influenza on the hospital and the subsequent cancellation of elective surgery this week.

Whilst flu presentations and admissions are slowly decreasing, projections would indicate that it will be early next week before the hospital numbers return to normal.

Taking these projections into account hospital management has decided to extend the cancellation of  non time-critical elective surgery for Monday and Tuesday next week. UHK can confirm that surgery designated as time critical by surgeons will go ahead and that hospital staff will be in contact will all patients to update them on the status of their surgery over the coming days. The hospital will review this decision again on Monday.

Hospital Management wishes to reassure patients that every effort will be made to re-arrange their surgeries as soon as possible.

Hospital management also wish to advise the public that strict visitor restrictions to visiting time only will remain in place until the end of the influenza surge.”
