WITH children well back into the swing of things in school, the Ardfert kids cycle couldn’t be better timed to encourage them to get out and be active at the weekends.

The cycle is taking place on this Sunday, September 16 at 12pm and children have the option of a 5km or 10km cycle and this promises to be a great event for kids.

At last year’s inaugural kids cycle, 58 kids who were all accompanied by an adult took part. The kids were well marshalled having been led out by the gardai and with parents patrolling the outside lane with the kids moved through their paces in the inside lane.

David Fitzgerald, who attended the school previously, will be there again this year to give advice and  encouragement to the young and possibly the not so young riders.

Principal Betty Stack said she was delighted with how the cycle went last year and said all at the school are thrilled to be associated again with an event that encourages children to make positive life choices in getting out and participating in great exercise.

She said she hoped the fun of the day and the success of former student David Fitzgerald would act as an incentive for kids to get involved in sporting activities. Mrs. Stack noted how important it was to have role models like David for kids to look up to.

There will be a family fun day feel back at the school as a DJ will be there to keep the supporters entertained and to call out the kids as they return from their route where they will be presented with medals and a treat bag.

Participants must be aged 8 and over and be accompanied by an adult. Registration fee for the fun cycle is €10 per child or €25 per family (3 children or more). Registration will take place in Ardfert National School on Sunday 16th before the cycle at 11 – 11.45am. For more information and map of the routes check out Ardfert Annual Cycle on Facebook.
