A FAMILY in Racecourse Heights have been left reeling following an unprovoked early morning attack on their property last week, that was seemingly a case of mistaken identity.

The home of Faiq Shaikh and his wife was attacked by unidentified men while they and their two children, between the ages of five and ten months old, slept in their beds.

The following morning, a shaken and very concerned Faiq Shaikh took to Facebook to give an account of the ordeal his family had faced and to warn people to take care when answering the door late at night. It was later posted on the ‘Tralee Do You Know’ Facebook page, while Faiq also gave an interview on Radio Kerry this morning about the attack.

Faiq Shaikh and his family were awoken at approximately 4:30am last Saturday morning, by loud banging at his front door from two men shouting and screaming to come outside.

He ran downstairs, thinking it was a neighbour alerting him to something to do with his home or car, but when he opened the door he was confronted by two men, who  tried to gain entry.

Faiq managed to get the door closed while his wife shouted to the men that she had called the gardaí. All the while, the two children were in a distressed state.

Faiq said the gardaí told them they would be at his home by 4:50am. The men, who had been kicking the door, soon left without gaining entry. The whole event left the family traumatised.

Faiq, who has been living and working in Tralee for 10 years, does not believe the attack was racially motivated, but rather a case of mistaken identity as they were screaming another person’s name.

“For me whatever was the motive behind this attack but it has changed my perception of social security,” wrote Faiq. “If my door would have opened or broke, I have no idea what they could have done with my family regardless the motive of this attack whether its personal or mistaken.

“I am not playing an ethnicity or racial card here but the only reason I am sharing my feeling to let everyone knows to prepare yourself for the worst and never opened the door before you make sure who is knocking and why.

“I do not know that how many more nights me and my family have stay awake all night. But one thing I can tell everyone that I am prepared for the worst now,” he wrote on Facebook.
