HOLLYWOOD star Michael Fassbender appears to have ruled himself out of the running to be the next James Bond and instead said Jack O’Connell, whose father hails from Ballyheigue, to become the next man to play the iconic MI5 spy.

“I just love Bond. Doesn’t everyone?” said the 39-year-old Fassbender Speaking to the GQ magazine.

“It’s always a fun conversation to have. But Bond should be someone in their early 20s … I always thought Bond should be British, but let’s get an American in or maybe someone like Jack O’Connell would be good?”

O’Connell was born in Alvaston, Derby in the UK but his father, John Patrick O’Connell hailed from Ballyheigue. In an interview with the Irish Times earlier this year, he had this to say; “If I could choose, I’d love to be able to claim I was born there. I follow Ireland in the football and rugby. I follow Kerry in the football. I follow the culture. But not too much or you get dubbed a ‘plastic Paddy’.”

The 26-year-old inherited a love for the Kerry football team from his father. After the 2014 All-Ireland final he congratulated the Kerry team on winning another Sam on Twitter. He visited Tralee last year during the Rose of Tralee Festival and chatted to fans in The Abbey Inn on a night out.

O’Connell made his name for himself first on the Channel 4 Drama ‘Skins’ and has since gone onto appear in the ‘300’ sequel and the critically acclaimed ’71’, where he played the part of a British soldier caught behind enemy lines during The Troubles. He also played the lead role in ‘Unbroken’.
