Our movie guy, James Finnegan, wishes all readers a Happy New Year and hopes for a memorable year of film watching in 2023…

In Dr Seuss’ The Lorax (Saturday 12.35pm TG4), 12 year old Ted Wiggins (voiced by Zac Efron) lives in Thneedville, a walled city where all vegetation and plant life is artificial.  He wants to find a real tree to impress a girl.

He meets the Once-ler, a reclusive old man and former inventor, who created the city and finds out about the grumpy forest creature who tried to stop him destroying the trees.  Ted is inspired to undo the environmental damage

Staring the vocal talents of Danny DeVito, Ed Helms and Taylor Swift among others, this is the Grinch’s lesser known sibling.

Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan star in Director Nora Ephron’s seminal romcom, Sleepless in Seattle (Saturday 1.40pm RTE1).

The story follows a reporter (Ryan) who, despite being recently engaged, becomes attracted to a recently widowed architect (Hanks), whose son calls in to a talk radio program looking for a new partner for his grieving father.

In the utterly charming animation film Sing (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1), Matthew McConaughey voices hustling theatre-boss koala Buster Moon as he tries to save his theatre.

He decides to hold a singing competition which becomes far bigger than he anticipates, with animal characters come from all over to realise their dreams.

Starring the vocal talents of  Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane, Scarlett Johansson, John C. Reilly, Tori Kelly, and Taron Egerton among others, as well as over sixty famous songs, this is a pure fun film that can be enjoyed by all the family.

Will Farrell and John C Reilly (again) are perfectly cast in Step Brothers (Saturday 9.30pm RTE2)

Brennan (Farrell) and Dale (Reilly) are two spoilt forty year old men who have never left home.  However that changes when Brennan’s mother Nancy (Mary Steenburgen) marries Dale’s father Robert (Richard Jenkins) and the two “boys” have to share a room

They take an instant dislike to each other, but when their long suffering parents insist they find jobs, they are forced to work together. However, please be advised that there is plenty of colourful metaphors so don’t watch if you are easily offended.

A motor mouthed US Army DJ, Adrian Cronauer (Robin Williams) is sent to entertain the American GI’s fighting in 1960’s Saigon in Good Morning Vietnam (Saturday 9.35 TG4).

However his irreverent style and methods do not go down well with the military top brass especially when he makes controversial comments on how the conflict is going.

Also starring Forrest Whitaker, JT Walsh and Robert Wuhl, and directed by Barry Levinson, this shows Williams talents to the full.  Enjoy!
