Our movie guy, James Finnegan, on some movies playing on the box tonight…

Spider-Man: Far from Home (Saturday 6.35pm RTE1) sees Tom Holland resume his role as our hero, swinging across a number of European locations.

Unfortunately for him, his difficulties in combining a superhero responsibility with his everyday life continue to follow him.

This time he ends up having to deal with elemental monsters, as well as trying to deal with his feelings for MJ (Zendaya) and the loss of his mentor Tony Stark.

Other complications arise in the guise of Nick Fury (Samuel L Jackson) and another hero from another Universe, Mysterio, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, but is he all he seems to be?

Also starring Cobie Smulders, Jon Favreau and Marisa Tomei, this is great high octane superhero action.

21 Jump Street (Saturday 9.15pm RTE2) is apparently based on a 1980’s television series, of which I have no memory whatsoever.

Cops Morton Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Greg Jenko (Channing Tatum) did not get on when they were at school together, but they are now friends and partners.

Their captain (Ice Cube) decides that there youthful appearance makes them perfect undercover agents to take down a high school drug ring.

Suffice to say that their return to their adolescent experiences brings back old wounds and attitudes in what could be described best as broad humour.

In The Blind Side (Saturday 9.25pm RTE1), a homeless teenager, who has limited education and life skills, is adopted by a middle class family, led by an indomitable wife and mother, Leigh Anne, played by Sandra Bullock in long overdue Oscar-winning form.

Thanks to the family love and support, “Big Mike”( Quinton Aaron) turns his life around and works towards getting the grades he needs to get for a college scholarship and achieving his aspiration to become an American Football star

Directed by John Lee Hancock, who has a number of solid film credits, this is an inspiring story that has the additional charm of being true.

In Benny and Joon (Saturday 9.50pm TG4), a mentally ill woman, Juniper (Mary Stuart Masterson) falls for an eccentric stranger, Sam (Johnny Depp) who has a love of the silent black and white comedy film classics, especially those of Buster Keaton.

However, her overprotective brother, Benny (Aidan Quinn) is not happy at all about their relationship.

Featuring the Proclaimers famous “500 Miles” song, as well as a wonderful appreciation of the physical comedy of those great films by Depp, this is an utterly charming and well regarded film.
