Since you won’t be going out this New Year’s Eve (or the day after, or the day after etc.), our movie guy, James Finnegan, has some film suggestions for your viewing pleasure over the coming days…

There are a number of excellent films on the television this New Years Eve and New Years Day that I think you might enjoy.  Here are just a few for your consideration.

New Years Eve

The Princess Bride10am Comedy Central

This Fantasy Comedy has become one of the great Cult Classics.  It is framed around a Grandfather (Peter Falk) reading to his sick grandson.

The story is of Westley, a farmhand, who must rescue his true love, Princess Buttercup, from the nasty prince Humperdinck. Fortunately Westley meets a number of people along the way who join his quest.  One for Adults and Children “As You Wish”.

Guys and Dolls — 13.00 TG4

Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) is a gambler looking for a venue to hold an unlicensed game, while facing pressure from long time fiancé to set a date for their wedding.

He meets Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando) who would bet on anything.  Nathan sets him the challenge to bring Sergeant Sarah Brown from the Save a Soul Mission to dinner in Havana, Cuba.  One of the great musicals.

Creed9.20pm RTE 2

The son of Apollo Creed who died in the ring wants to follow his father into the sport.  He seeks the help of his father’s old rival turned friend, who agrees to train the young fighter for his shot at the title.

However, Rocky Balboa is facing his own challenges.  Starring Michael B Jordan, and, of course, Sylvester Stallone, this was the rebirth of the Rocky franchise.

New Years Day

The Misfits1.00 pm TG4

Set in the Nevada desert, a divorcee forms a relationship with a group of cowboys trying to eke out their living roping wild horses.  Staring Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe, Eli Wallach, Montgomery Cliff, directed by John Huston and a screenplay by Arthur Miller, this is an astonishing film.  It is also Gable and Monroe’s final completed film.

Sense and Sensibility2.15pm RTE One

Following the death of their father, three young girls find themselves in abject poverty.  The responsibility for providing for the family fall to the eldest sisters, who fall for two very different potential husbands.

Directed by Ang Lee and starring Kate Winslet, Hugh Grant, Alan Rickman and Emma Thompson who also won her second Oscar for this screenplay, this is period comedy drama at its best.

Murder on the Orient Express —  9.25 RTE One

This is the latest version of the classic Agatha Christie murder mystery, directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh as the famous Belgian Detective Hercule Poirot.

There is a murder aboard the luxury Orient Express, and no shortage of potential suspects all played by a star studded cast of Penelope Cruz, Willem Defoe, Judi Dench, Johnny Depp, Derek Jacobi, Michelle Pfeiffer, Josh Gad and Daisy Ridley.

I wish you and your family a very happy and healthy 2021 and an early return to the big screen as soon as possible
