Our movie guy, James Finnegan, takes a look at one of modern cinemas finest directors, Christopher Nolan, with a couple of his movies playing at Tralee Omniplex…

It has been a good couple of weeks for those who enjoy the films of director, producer and writer Christopher Nolan.

While we wait in ever growing anticipation for his latest opus “Tenet”, we have been able to enjoy some of the back catalogue of this exceptional filmmaker, thanks to the “Bring It Back” series at the Omniplex.

This is the man behind “Memento”, “Insomnia”, “The Prestige”, “Interstellar” and “Dunkirk”.

However, he is perhaps best known for “Inception” and the Batman Trilogy.  We have recently enjoyed again “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight” on the big screen.  This week sees the screening of “The Dark Knight Returns” that brings the story to its conclusion.

Set eight years after the events of the Dark Knight, organised crime has been almost eradicated by Commissioner Gordon, thanks to the use of the Dent Act.

Batman has disappeared, still publicly blamed for the crimes of former District Attorney Harvey Dent, but this sits uneasy with Gordon who knows the truth.  Bruce Wayne has become a recluse, and Wayne Enterprises is in decline.

Christopher Nolan on set with Christian Bale as Batman.

The arrival of a former member of the League of Shadows, Bane, and Cat Burglar Selina Kyle (never actually referred to as Catwoman in the film) sees the return of Batman, although he is not in the best of condition.

Bane and his gang imprison the Gotham Police force in the sewers and literally cut of the city off from the rest of the World, while taking revenge on the self styled great and good.  However, there are even more surprising twists and turns, as well as the return of the previous films characters that gives an epic feel to this story that began so many years before with a little boy on the worst night of his life.

The Nolan Bonus this week is the tenth anniversary showing of Inception on Wednesday and Thursday.

Don Cobb and his partner Arthur are thieves who steal by infiltrating his victims’ dreams by using military technology.  This enables a significant degree of corporate espionage.  They are given the task of implanting an idea in some ones subconscious – an inception.

He assembles a team of unique talents to put together an ingenuous plan of “dreams within dreams” that would require far more space than I have here to describe.

Instead, I recommend you go and see the film, and be prepared to be blown away with the imagery and concepts.

Acting talents that appear in both of these films include Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard and Michael Caine, which is another hint as to the esteem in which Nolan is held.  Another frequent collaborator is Composer Hans Zimmer, who is in top form with both soundtracks.

Other films on show this week include Broken Law (highly recommended), Unhinged, Daddy’s Home, and Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix.

Book your tickets in advance online, take advantage of the special ticket prices, enjoy and stay safe!
