Three Days Left At The Kerry Film Festival. Here’s What’s On…

WE’RE coming into the weekend and the last three days of Kerry Film Festival 2014, Here’s a quick guide of what’s on until the festival finishes this Saturday.

Thursday

4:00pm – Brandon Conference Centre – Ar Lorg Shomhairle – Tracing Sorley’s Footsteps

This is a film about Sorley MacLean, who is widely recognised as the most significant Gaelic poet of the twentieth century. Set against the overwhelmingly beautiful landscape of the Scottish Islands of Skye and Raasay this  film was shot and translated into Irish by, Éanna de Buis.

Eanna has recently taken up position as Filmmaker in Residence for Kerry County Council and will be holding workshops with children and youth groups across the County over the coming months

6:00pm – Kerry County Library – Literary Shorts

On offer today as part of the Literary Shorts series are 6 films in total, from the UK, Turkey, Italy, USA and Germany.

10:00pm – Brandon Conference Centre – Wake In Fright

A film from 1971 by Hollywood directer, Ted Kotcheff, which was almost lost, but has recently been restored and re-released.

Friday

1:00pm – Brandon Conference Centre – Experimental/Art Shorts

This is the last full day of screenings and it starts with another round of short films. Irish film makers are to the fore in this screening.

2:00pm – Brandon Conference Centre – La Grande Illusion

Shot in 1937, this French film is set during World War I and centres around two French soldiers who are captured and imprisoned in a German POW camp.

5:00pm – Brandon Conference Centre – Nickel Film Festival Shorts

The Nickel Film Festival is an annual film festival held in St. John’s, Canada. This is a screening of some of the short film winners from the festival.

8:00pm – Brandon Conference Centre – Irish Premiere of ‘Beyond Clueless’ and Live original score by the band ‘Summer Camp’

One of the highlights of the festival this year is this Irish Premiere of this documentary about teen movies, which will feature a live score from London based indie-pop group ‘Summer Camp’.

Saturday

2:00pm – Brendan Conference Centre – 50hr Film Shoot Shorts 

What is billed as ‘the highlight of the festival’ where filmmakers are given 50 hours to produce a movie. The winner will be revealed at the festival awards ceremony at 8pm the same evening in Siamsa Tire.

8:00pm – Siamsa Tire – Awards & Closing Film

Finishing up the festival will be the award ceremony which will include the presentation of the Maureen O’Hara award. This year it will be awarded posthumously, to American camerawoman, Sarah Jones, who tragically lost her life while filming a movie about musician Greg Allman this year.
