A VERY special event to recognise and reward Kerry’s brave little heroes who are dealing with cancer is being organised in Tralee on Sunday, September 29.

Organised by cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, a special ‘Little Heroes’ Fun day will take place at John Mitchel’s GAA Grounds from 3-6pm and will coincide with Children’s Cancer Awareness Month in September.

The brainchild of Recovery Haven manager, Siobhan MacSweeney, the fun event is a way of helping our most vulnerable cancer sufferers and their families forget about their illness for a few hours and enjoy a host of special treats laid on for them.

Recovery Haven already offers a range of counselling and group therapy sessions to children dealing with cancer, including the highly acclaimed CLIMB programme, which offers support to children dealing with a cancer diagnosis of a significant person in their life (from siblings to parents to grandparents).

However, Siobhan said that the charity wanted to do something extra special to mark Children’s Cancer Awareness Month, while making a big fuss of our own little fighters and their families.

“We wanted to show our appreciation for these amazing, brave youngsters right across the county who are enduring some very difficult battles, and what better way to do that than to organise a fun day in their honour,” Siobhan explained.

“Our Little Heroes day is all about celebrating these wonderful children and their families, while highlighting the growing range of services available for children affected by cancer at Recovery Haven. We want to show them that we are all here for them.”

Siobhan explained that the event is not restricted to Recovery Haven clients, but is open to any child going through cancer or dealing with a cancer diagnosis in their immediate families.

Among the fun activities planned for the afternoon will be bouncy castles, vintage fire engine rides, a visit from the garda car, magical fairy fun, a disco with DJ Donal and lots of goodies to give away.

Entry is free and Siobhan is encouraging as many families as possible to come along and celebrate these amazing, brave little fighters. Meanwhile, anyone else willing to offer their services to make this day extra special is asked to contact Recovery Haven on 0667192122.
