IRISH Water has announced that funding has been announced for a new waste water treatment plant in Fenit.

The announcement was made at today’s monthly meeting of Kerry County Council. Fianna Fáil Cllr Mikey Sheehy and Sinn Féin Cllr Deirdre Ferris have both welcomed the news.

The project will now continue through the next stages including design, detailed planning, procurement and approvals.

“I’ve been shouting and roaring about the issue at Irish Water clinics, at Kerry County Council meetings and at Tralee MD meetings since I was elected and am thrilled to see it over the line,” said Cllr Sheehy.

“This is now a hugely exciting time for Fenit as the highly anticipated Greenway nears completion. This wastewater upgrade will allow the the area to reach its untapped potential,” he added.

Cllr Deirdre Ferris said the upgrade has been a long time coming and Fenit has been hindered in its development both residentially and commercially for years.

“Houses could not be built and businesses could not set up as the treatment plant was at full capacity,” said Cllr Ferris.

“The opening of the Tralee-Fenit Greenway will lead to extra visitors to the village, but any expansion in developing the community up until now has been prevented.

“We have been calling for this for years and it is raised at nearly every Kerry County Council Meeting. The next hurdle to face now is the timeline. I am calling Irish Water to get this project proceeded as a matter of urgency. Fenit has waited long enough and I and my colleagues will now press for its progress,” she said.
