Fundraising Walk Aims To Reclaim Bracker O’Regan Road Name From ‘Fat Mile’

THE Chairman of Austin Stacks GAA Club is to undertake a fundraiser for the club which also aims to reclaim the name of a local road named after a Rockie legend.

Billy Ryle will walk 100km on the Bracker O’Regan Road from Friday, July 17 to Sunday, July 26. The main objective of the 100km walk is to raise €25,000 for urgently needed repair and upgrading work at the Austin Stacks playing pitches in Connolly Park.

But its dual purpose is to reclaim the official name ‘Bracker O’Regan Road’ for the O’Regan family and the Stacks club, from being known colloquially as ‘The Fat Mile’.

“By donating to the fundraiser, you are sending out a clear message that it’s time to stop referring to the road as ‘The Fat Mile’,” said Billy. “The use of the word ‘fat’ is offensive and unkind to people who have weight issues and is discouraging body self-conscious people from walking on Bracker O’Regan Road.”

“The word ‘mile’ is a measurement of the British imperial system, which has long since been replaced by the metric system. All GAA measurements are metric,” said Billy.

“Tralee Town Council generously acknowledged Martin’s outstanding contribution to the sporting life of Tralee and Kerry by naming the new link road in his honour. He was a perfect gentleman, a supreme sports man and a rare auld stock of the Rock. He has earned his right to immortality,” said Billy.

Billy will walk 100km (100 laps of 1km) over the ten-day period. He will walk two sessions per day on the path, beginning and ending at the Bracker Monument – a 6km walk beginning at 10am and a 4km walk beginning at 3pm.

The Bracker 100km is a worldwide online fundraiser to pay for a path behind the main pitch in Connolly Park. The new path will prevent footfall damage on the pitches and will facilitate disability access to the far terrace in Connolly Park.

All donations, large or small, will be gratefully accepted through the online fundraiser. Link can be found at

The Bracker 100km fundraising walk will be launched at the Bracker Monument on Monday, 13th July at 7.30pm by Austin Stacks and Kerry football legend, Mikey Sheehy.

Martin ‘Bracker’ O’Regan was one of Austin Stacks finest footballers who won two All-Ireland senior football medals (1931, 1932) with Kerry, one All-Ireland junior football medal (1930), four County Championship senior football medals (1930, 1931, 1932 and 1936) and two County Championship senior hurling medals (1929, 1931) with his club.
