STUDENTS from one local school were busy last week as they celebrated the European Day of Languages.

Gaelcholáisate Chiarraí is the school in question and was home to different languages on the morning of Friday September 25.

German, French, Polish, Romanian and Gaeilge could be heard over the school intercom for the morning announcements, while at break-time pupils were able to purchase croissants, pain au chocolats and Bavarian Pretzels from the school shop.

The  occasion was about both acknowledging the cultural diversity that exists inside the school while also allowing pupils the chance to use a foreign language in an authentic and practical setting.

The school also welcomed two language assistants this week who will be working with the students to help further enhance the pupils’ language learning experience.

Meanwhile a large group of students from the school had a day out in sunny Co. Laois last week. They travelled up to the National Ploughing Championships at Ratheniska and had a great time at the event.
