garda_1GARDAÍ are warning the public about a phone scam which can clear the credit on your phone or add large amounts to your monthly bill.

People around the county are reporting that they received calls from a foreign number starting with 00 247. A person can be heard shouting in distress in the background and they then hang up.

If the person who receives the call rings back, then their phone credit is used up or if they have bill phone, a huge amount is added to it.

Gardaí are telling people not to answer the calls starting with 00 247, which, according to Google, is the prefix for phone numbers in Ascension Island an isolated volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, mid way between Africa and South America.

Chances are, you probably don’t know anyone there!

If you see the number come up let it ring out, or if you do answer it, don’t ring back.
