GARDAI in Kerry are to start issuing more fines in relation to people breaching the 5km rule.

At the online meeting of the Joint Policing Committee this morning, Kerry Garda Division Chief Superintendent Eileen Foster said she noticed traffic was heavier during this particular lockdown compared to the same period last spring.

She said that they are going to push enforcement further with the issuing of tickets and fines, but gardaí will use discretion as they see fit. Fixed Payment Notice (FPN) fines of €100 can be issued by gardaí since Monday for people breaking the 5km Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Chief Supt Foster said they had also increased checkpoints around the county in the past few weeks and that while enforcement was a matter for gardaí, people must exercise personal responsibility and stay at home.

She said there was no excuse for people driving more than 5km to scenic locations to take exercise and they need to abide by the restrictions.

Gardaí have zero credibility after enforcing a lockdown of 5km on the citizens of the state.
Especially after the virus was imported into Ireland by air travel from abroad over the holiday period.
A forced lockdown like this is a form akin to house arrest!
I feel the Gardaí are in breach the constitution, a primary dereliction of duty to the citizen of the state.
If the TD’s told the Gardaí to round us all up and put us into concentration camps, I do believe they would be up for it.

Shame on the Gardaí, if this is how you serve and protect – get lost.
