Gardaí Issue Advice After Rise In Thefts From Vehicles In Kerry, Cork And Limerick

GARDAÍ in the Southern Region are reminding people to ‘Park Smart’ as recent figures show that there have been almost 170 thefts from vehicle incidents in counties Cork, Kerry and Limerick for the month of August.

This is an increase of approximately 90 incidents on the previous month. There is always a rise in thefts in Kerry at that time of year due to locals and tourists parking at the many scenic spots in the county, which are sometimes targeted by criminals.

Speaking at Fermoy Garda Station, Crime Prevention Officer Sgt John Kelly said “Wherever you park your car or van, we would always advise you to take your property with you and ensure the vehicle is locked, alarmed and parked in a secure, well-lit location. If you must leave property in your vehicle, keep it out of sight. If you keep tools and equipment in your vehicle and it is not practical to store them indoors, consider additional locking mechanisms for your vehicle.  Figures from our ‘Park Smart’ appeal at the beginning of the year showed that nearly 1 in every 3 cars that were broken into we left unlocked.”
