GARDAI have reissued a warning about phone scams after reports that people have been caught by fraudsters.
Gardai say scammers are using numbers beginning with 021 or 066 making it look like they are calls from local numbers, but on closer inspection the number is much longer than those which originate from Tralee or Cork.
Gardai are asking people to ignore the calls and not to ring back because the scammers will empty their credit or run up a huge bill. They said some people who have hospital appointments in Cork have seen the 021 missed call and rang back only to end up out of pocket.
They are also warning of another scam where fraudsters claim to be from the bank looking for information. If this happens, hang up and call the bank yourself.
