GARDAÍ  are advising restaurant staff and other businesses to beware of a scam involving a person making large bookings.

A person rang a restaurant in Killarney to make the large booking and sent on a cheque deposit to secure it. He sent on more money than was necessary and asked the restaurant to transfer back the difference – a sum of €5,000 – to a bank account.

The people at the restaurant became suspicious and contacted gardai. The booking never materialised and efforts to contact the person came to nothing. The person gave the false name ‘Griffith Walsh’ and spoke with an English accent.

Gardaí are urging businesspeople to be vigilant against this type of scam.
