TRALEE Gardaí took part in ‘Go Purple Day’ on Friday to help raise awareness of domestic violence and the supports available to those affected in Ireland.

Minister Norma Foley, Mr Michael Healy Rae T.D. and Mr Pat Daly T.D. were in attendance at Tralee Garda Station on the day along with representatives from support agencies in Kerry, including Catherine Casey from Adapt Kerry and Ms Vera O’Leary of the Kerry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre.

The initiative was first organised in 2020 by Community Garda, Stacey Looby from Athlone Garda Station to help strengthen community partnerships between domestic abuse services and An Garda Síochána, and it is now a national day of awareness about domestic abuse.

Chief Superintendent Eileen Foster and Superintendent Fergal Pattwell, Gardaí in Tralee also raised the purple flag outside the Station on Friday.

There were informal discussions at Tralee Garda Station between all the agencies, Gardai, community representatives and guests. Members of An Garda Síochána wore purple ties/socks on the day.

“It was a great success and focused the beam of hope on support services for victims of domestic violence from An Garda Siochana and the fabulous support services, especially those in Co Kerry,” said Garda Fidelma O’Leary, Garda Victim Service Officer for An Garda Síochána in the Kerry Division.

Kerry County Council lit up County Buildings at Rathass, at Princess Quay and the Ashe Memorial Hall in purple last night in support of the initiative.
