Croilar Na Mhistealach residents took it upon themselves recently to learn the basics of Irish Sign Language.

RESIDENTS of a local estate have recently completed their ten week long course to learn the basics of sign language.

The people of Croilar Na Mistealach estate and members of the wider community have been coming together once a week over the last number of months to learn the skills.

The group undertook the ten week basic sign language workshop which started with them learning the alphabet, numbers and then everyday phrases.

It was all taught by Croilar Na Mhistealach resident Michelle Ward, who is herself deaf. Out of the 18 houses in Croilar Na Mhistealach estate, there are two households that have deaf tenants.

“The residents committee were open to learning ISL so we can try to communicate with our neighbours so that everyone would feel included in the estate.” said Kristine Siline, a resident in the estate.

The next 10 week block of sign language classes will be starting on Wednesday September 16 from 6pm – 7pm in Aras an Phobail Community Room, Dean’s Lane here in town with everyone welcome to attend.
