THE founder of the successful ‘Hairy Baby’ company, who hails from Tralee, has revealed that a t-shirt, inspired by the O’Donovan brothers from Skibbereen, is their biggest selling t-shirt to date.

Daragh Murphy, of the Cork company which makes novelty t-shirts and other products, also said he received inspiration for a t-shirts from chatting with friends at the back of St John’s Church during Mass in his youth.

Speaking to Deirdre Walsh on her Radio Kerry ‘Talkabout’ programme today, Daragh revealed the company sells products to every conceivable corner of the planet, even selling one to an Irish person in the Antarctic.

The Tralee man was quick off the mark when he heard Ireland’s Olympic heroes, O’Donovan brothers, interviews on RTE, responding immediately with the ‘Pull Like A Dog’ t-shirt, which came out almost straight away after the phrase was uttered by the lads.

He said the company has been operating in Cork since 2007 and that particular t-shirt has been their biggest seller to date.

‘Hairy Baby’ employs five people in their Cork office but that will treble in the next couple of months coming up to Christmas. The company has its own Fr Ted, Martin’s Life and Sminky Shorts range of products,  but they take their inspiration from uniquely Irish everyday sayings.

Daragh revealed he came up with one idea for a t-shirt based on an utterance from a weekly visit to Mass in Tralee long ago.

“Standing at the back of St John’s as a teenager with the lads, spotting the talent and responding to ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord’ with ‘Hosanna in the Hiace’. That’s the kind of thing that becomes a t-shirt,” he said.
