Illegal Dumping Near One Of Tralee’s Most Scenic Areas

Bags of rubbish dumped on the ditch at the side of the road leading down to the Lock Gates area.

EARLIER this week, Tralee received some disheartening news about it’s placing in the latest Irish Business Against Litter league placing, dropping to 33rd place and being deemed ‘moderately littered’, despite the huge efforts of Tidy Towns volunteers.

Councillors rightly said people had to step up and take responsibility for their actions, but a case of illegal dumping on Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning, beyond Lohercannon on the road to the Lock Gates, shows that message is falling on the deaf ears of some individuals.

A local resident contacted us in disgust at what happened near his home close to one of the Tralee area’s renowned beauty spots which commands amazing views of Tralee Bay. A place where a public picnic area is to be developed by the Council.

The rubbish dumped at the side of the road.

Someone had dumped four large black bags of rubbish and a tyre on the ditch on the side of the road. The resident said it’s a common occurrence and he’s fed up with it.

The Council was informed and workers promptly called out to collect the rubbish, thankfully before the bags were burst by animals or birds. Sadly, this is not the only place on the outskirts of town this is happening.

Other spots like the bridge in Kerries West or near Scotia’s grave have been the scene of disgraceful illegal dumping in the past.

Tralee Municipal District councillors said this week that the public has a duty to report people they see littering, but incidents like this usually happen in the dead of night when nobody is around in isolated areas. It’s a sad reflection on some of the people in this town.

I have contacted Tralee Council regarding constant littering back in July asking for contact details so I could report it however I received no response to date and littering continues.
