THE ever-popular Swim for a Mile programme is back for 2019 and registrations are now open.

Kerry Recreation & Sports Partnership (KRSP) in collaboration with Swim Ireland, Healthy Ireland and three public swimming pools in Kerry — including at the complex in Tralee — are offering a unique coaching programme for adults.

The programme commences week beginning February 4th for 12 weeks.  The aim is to swim a mile and participate in  a fun, social and participation-themed ‘Swim for a Mile’ challenge at the end of April.

To prepare, Ballybunnion Health & Leisure Centre, Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre and Tralee Regional Sports Complex are facilitating a 12-week coached training programme for interested participants.

In order to take part all participants will need to register for both the 12 week coaching programme on http://www.kerryrecreationandsports.ie/ or the eventbrite link for Tralee here and also register for the event on https://www.swimforamile.com/signup. The cost is €50/€40 for the coaching programme and €30 for the event.

The eventbrite link for Ballybunion is here and for Killarney here.

As a means of spreading the costs, participants will need to sign up to the event by week 5 to continue with the coaching programme.

In Kerry there will be three locations facilitating the swim for a mile challenge event – Ballybunion April 27th, Killarney April 26th and Tralee on April 28th.

The programme is open to all abilities especially newcomers to swimming. The one requirement is to be able to swim two consecutive pool lengths.

All pools are offering morning, evening and weekend sessions to tie in with busy lifestyles. Unsure if you can swim a mile?  This year they have introduced taster sessions where their poolside coaches can offer guidance and advice.

Just arrive at Ballybunnion and Tralee Centres on Sunday January 27th at 5pm.  For Killarney call the centre, 064 663 6555 and book a time that suits you.

Programme Facilitator Martina Lawless highlights that; “Kerry offers the unique opportunity of coached training with the support of qualified coaches and fellow swimmers as opposed to downloading the training programme from the Swim for a Mile website and doing it on your own.”

She continued by saying “a past participant said she went from struggling for every length to being comfortable and confident. The encouragement from the instructors was invaluable and there was great comradery within the training group.”
