THE Kerry minor football team of 2017 was honoured at the Kerry County Council Awards Night on Friday at Council Buildings.

Some of the team attended the ceremony with team manager Peter Keane to be feted by the local authority.

Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Sheahan, welcomed the delegation and saluted their amazing achievement.

“The All-Ireland minor championship ran for 88 years (apart from a few years during ‘The Emergency’) and in all that time no county had ever managed to string four consecutive successful campaigns together. Until 2017 that is,” he said.

“Of course, all of these teams also had a great support team in place. I’d like to acknowledge them some of them tonight, not least manager Peter Keane and his team and the officers of the County Board.

Cllr Sheahan also acknowledged the role the clubs, parents and underage structure has played in the success and looked forward to seeing them go on to greater success.

“These players represent the future of Kerry football. It is heart-warming to see so many of our recent minors involved with the current Kerry senior team, and doing so well in the current National League campaign.

We reflect on their historic achievements but we also wish them well for the future. I hope that these magnificent young men will go on to represent Kerry at senior level, and that they will do so displaying the splendid skills and eye-catching flamboyance that they have shown so consistently at minor level.”

A presentation was made to the minors and Peter Keane who thanked the local authority for the award. A number of councillors were present as well as CEO of KCC Moira Murrell.
