Students and staff from IT Tralee launching the reusable cups campaign last week.

IT Tralee launched its bid to win the an Taisce Green Campus Flag today with a celebration of reusable cups!

In the first of several initiatives aimed to reduce single-use plastic on campus, those with a reusable cup will benefit from a 40c discount on a cup of tea or coffee.

Mary Burke (Green Campus team member) said: “We know that in Ireland, 22,000 single use cups are disposed of per hour. In a waste audit conducted on campus earlier this year, we found that single-use cups make up a significant proportion of our waste so we decided that tackling this issue was a good place to start.”

The Institute has provided all incoming first year students with a reusable cup to facilitate the transition to a plastic-free, environmentally-conscious campus.

IT Tralee Students Union Vice President, Joseph Kavanagh said: “IT Tralee Students Union, and myself especially, are a strong advocate for environmental sustainability. It’s fantastic to see an initiative like this spring up and be taken up so willingly by the student body.

“Thanks to the Institute, we have been able to distribute a reusable cup to every first year student in IT Tralee and the change is already visible on campus. This is just the beginning for ITT Students Union, with many more campaigns planned around similar issues throughout the year.   The next generation of college students have a very keen interest in environmental and sustainability issues and they’re not going to let their voices go unheard – and as a Union, we’re delighted to represent these issues at avenue that we may be able to.”

Donal Hunt the Estates Manager and Energy Champion at IT Tralee said “this project will build on the work and practices already implemented at IT Tralee which are saving IT Tralee €170k per annum on energy and other resources.”
