CLUB PROFILE
Name: John Joe Sheehy

Senior John Mitchel’s player from/to: 1982 -2000

Kerry: 5 Senior Appearances 1988

Playing position: Midfield

(Q): What has been one of your greatest accomplishments as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “For me it was my final match as a Mitchel’s senior player because I got to play with my two sons Mark & Niall. All three Sheehy’s made up the full forward line on the day and also got the majority of the scores. It was a great honour to play with my two sons and a cherished memory that I’m very proud of”.

(Q): Which players in the Club would you have looked up to?
(A): “I have always called Martin Dennehy the greatest.
He was the most complete footballer I have ever played with.
Martin was brave he had great peripheral vision he was great in the tackle, great finisher
and had great football intelligence. When I was growing up Mikey Sheehy was the player that inspired me. I was glad to have had the opportunity to play on the same team with him in the Nationl League with Kerry.

(Q): Who was the most difficult opponent that you had to mark/play against?
(A): “The most difficult player that I marked was in training against Timmy O’Dowd.
At the Thursday training sessions we would play a match. I usually marked Timmy which was extremely difficult as he was such a great footballer.

(Q): Can you tell me what is satisfying about your sport?
(A): “The most satisfying aspect for me was the lifelong friendships that I have made.
Not only in my own Club but people that I would have played against from around the County became very good friends”

(Q): What other sports have you been involved in?
(A): “I play a lot of golf and in the past number of years mainly due to our Club Vice Chairman, Noel O’Connor I do a lot of cycling. In my playing days I was also into surfing as a result I missed one or two training sessions which didn’t go down to well with the team management”.

(Q): What was one of your biggest disappointments as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “The greatest disappointment for me was in my time as Senior team Captain.
I believe that I should have been more assertive and decisive when tough decisions had to be made”. Looking back I also regret that I didn’t listen and take the advice given to me by my Dad. He was very patient and understanding with me when it came to my commitment to football. It was later on that I realised how right he was”.

(Q): If you could change a rule(s) in Gaelic football what would that be?
(A): “I believe there should be a financial reward/payment for players especially
Inter-county players. All players nowadays have to be so committed that it has a huge impact on their family and social life. I also believe that Referees should be consistent in their interpretation of the rules of the game. Presently various referees can dictate how games are played this is not right. The Rules of the game are clearly defined and should be adhered to strictly by all Referees”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the club?
(A): “I believe the wonderful facilities and the juvenile membership we have in the club now will be the catalyst needed for success in the future for the club.
I look forward to the senior team in 20 years’ time winning county titles with a full forward line of Kelleher, Dennehy and keohane that been of course Olivia Kelleher, Laura Dennehy and Jessica Keohane”.
