Under-16 BOYS
Central League Semi Final- Mitchels 5-10 , Castlegregory 2-13.
This game was a classic example of the saying “never write off a Mitchels Team” as the team put in a massive second half to book a place in the final. We started the game very poorly with Castle getting 1-5 without us scoring and we looked dead and tired on the pitch but we finally woke up 10 minutes into the game where we put two points on the board from Michael Kelleher and Eoin Sugrue but then Castlegregory flew down the pitch to get a goal and a few points before Ryan Ward buried a goal and we got 2 more points before the ref blew the half time whistle with the score 2-09 to 1-4 in favour of Castgregory.

The team received a wide awakening at half time and it seemed to work like magic as they flew out of the traps in the second half to quickly get a a goal and two points from Michael Kelleher before Castlegregory got 2 of only 4 points on the second half. quickly after those points we received a penalty which was clinically dispatched by Jack Myers and then a 45 made it’s way into the net from the boot of Michael Kelleher put us 2 points ahead but once Castle fought back with two great points which finished off their scoring.

A spilled ball by the Castlegregory keeper fell onto Ryan Wards boot and he finished followed by a point by Owen Breen put us 4 points ahead and we finished off the game with two magnificent points from Michael Kelleher and Ryan Ward to complete an unbelievable comeback and exceptional second half. Congrats to all players for such a great second half performance. Next for us is To Be Confirmed.

U-6 BOYS & GIRLS
On Sunday the 26th of April our under 6s welcomed some players from Keel to train with us. We had massive numbers ourselves with 42 Mitchels players a mix of both boys and girls and also there was 16 players from Keel but our top class mentor team of 12 people both men and woman were well able.

Lots of fun was had by all during training while they all completed an obstacle course and performed some basic football skills as part of the session. We ended the session by playing 3 fun matches and players showed great skills and had lots of fun.

A super day was had by all children who went to represent Mitchels Under 6s against Dr Crokes last Saturday morning – Great fun was had on the bus to and from Killarney with a special thanks to all players who were superbly behaved all morning – our U6s wore the colours with great pride in their fun football matches – with special mentions to;

Questions & Answers
Player Profile: Jimmy O Mahony
Honours Won:
John Mitchels Minor County football Championship title 1961 (Team Captain)
Senior County Football Championship titles 1961, 1962, 1963
Kerry:
Minor Munster title 1962
Minor All Ireland Title 1962 (Team Captain)
Munster U21 title 1962
Player Position: Midfield

(Q): Can you tell about the history of the 1961 minor title?
(A): “We played against Castleisland Desmond’s in the 1961 final. We had a superb minor team, if that team could have represented Kerry I have little doubt we would have won the All-Ireland that year. On the team we had players like Mikie Morris and Dom O Donnell who went on to win U21, Junior and Senior All Ireland titles with Kerry. I played in midfield alongside Mikie Morris. On the path to the final we defeated Mid-Kerry, St. Brendan’s and Austin Stack’s. Mitchel’s also had a very good minor team in 1962 and were narrowly beaten in the Championship by North Kerry in Listowel”.
(Q): What do you believe you brought to the team as captain?
(A): “I believe I brought leadership and encouragement. I never had to use four letter words to any player we played as a happy team. Jacques Mc Donald was a wonderful coach we also had a great back room team in Eddie Dunne, John Joe Sheehy, Eamonn Fitzgerald and Jerry Flynn”.

(Q): What was your greatest accomplishment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “It was a great honour and a great since of accomplishment to captain the minor county champions in 1961”.

(Q): What player(s) would you have looked up to in the club

(A): “The player I would have looked up to and admired the most was Paudie Sheehy. Paudie was on the senior title winning team in 1952. What stood out about him for me was his speed great ball control and his accuracy. Paudie won seven senior county titles 1952, 1959-63 and 1966”.

(Q): What other sports were you involved in?

(A): “Weight lifting/training was my chosen sport after I finished playing football. My brother Gerald was the Father of modern weight training for athletics in Kerry. Many of our All Ireland winning champions trained in O’Mahony’s gym. Players like John O Keeffe, Tommy Doyle and Jimmy Deenihan to name but a few”.

(Q): Can you tell about your minor All Ireland title with Kerry in 1962?
(A): “It was a great honour for me to captain an All-Ireland winning team. John Mitchel’s had seven players on that Kerry team. We defeated Mayo 6-05 to 0-7. The U21 championship began that year and we had six Mitchel’s players on the panel including myself. Dom O Donnell was the captain and we won a Munster title beaten cork 2-07 to 1-04”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the club?
(A): “I would love to see Mitchel’s winning the intermediate championship and going back again to where we belong in the senior championship. I wish every success to the team and all at the club for the future”.
