Junior Football League 2015
Group 1 First named = home venue, Games @ 7.30 p
Rd 1 John Mitchels. v. Strand Rd

On last Friday evening we had our first game in this year’s Junior Division 1 County League at home to our old nemesis Kerins O’Rahillys

Whilst our first outing did end in defeat to our old friends in Strand Road all those present witnessed a top class encounter that was played at a senior pace which came as no surprise when one considers the passion and pride in the jersey of both Clubs.

We certainly can take a lot of positives from our first outing and build on these positives in advance of our next County League outing away to Legion on Monday May 25th.

Our defence stood up admirably to the fast moving Strand Road forwards and in particular Pat Carney and Arron O’Keeffe stood out, they were assisted by a strong performance by John Higgins at midfield.

Graham Higgins must come in for great praise for the tireless hour he put it of consisting thwarting the onslaught of the Strand Road attack.

In the forward line we had some excellent performances especially from Jake Moran who penetrated the Strand Road defence on too numerous occasions to mention and who also kicked some classy individual scores.

Our two inside forwards of David Rogers and James Duggan tormented their markers and James must be said was our Man of the Match in what was a top class performance by him over the hour and one that certainly attracted the interest of our Senior team Manager, Ger Dan Dennehy, who watched this game.

James will be knocking on the Senior team door with a performance like the one he gave on Friday night.

All in all we were very pleased with our first outing and will use this game as a platform to build on into the future, the Manager, Robert O’Dowd, was very astute in his team selection and strategy on the night and will I feel flourish in this new role within the Club.

Questions & Answers
Profile Session with Fred Lynch

Fred Lynch, – Trustee John Mitchel’s Club
Mitchel’s Senior Player From/To: 1953 – 1965
Honours Won:
Minor County Championship title 1954 (Team Captain)
Senior County Championship titles 1958-1963, (Team Captain 1961)
Player Position: Left Half Back

(Q): Can you tell me about the 1954 Minor County title?

(A): “We had a very good team that year. We won all our games through to the final where we met West Kerry. They had a star studded team people like, Tom Long, Frankie O’Leary and Seamus Murphy.
We won the game by a single point, 3-3 to West Kerry’s 1-8.
Seemingly it was a terrific game to watch. The referee was Jackie Lyne the famous Kerry footballer. Jacques Mc Donald was our trainer. He trained all three Minor winning teams 1954, 1958 and 1961”.
(Q): What player(s) would you have looked up to in the club?

(A): “The player for myself and many others was Niall Sheehy. If you asked anyone involved with the Five in a row era they would agree that Niall was the leading light. He was an extraordinary player. We played against North Kerry in the 1959 Senior County Final. With almost time up Niall came from the back line up to score a goal and level the match. If it wasn’t for that goal, Mitchel’s wouldn’t have won Five in a Row. Niall was always there to give encouragement to his team mates. The Sheehy Family namely Niall’s father John Joe (snr) his brothers Paudie, Sean Óg, Brian and Niall himself have won thirty County Championship titles between them. Thirty county titles in one family is truly a remarkable record”.

(Q): What has been your greatest accomplishment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “For me it was as Captain of the Minor and Senior winning teams. It was also a great accomplishment to be part of such a wonderful team surrounded by great players”.

(Q: Tell me your memories of the Five-in-a-Row era?

(A): “One of my best memories of that era was the 1960 Championship Quarter Final played against South Kerry in Killarney. South Kerry had some great players like Mick O Connell, Mick O Dwyer, Ned Fitzgerald, Marcus O Neil and Jim Sugrue. At half time the score was 10 points to 2 points in favour of South Kerry. After 10 minutes played in the second half we were 10 points down. Then we put on what I believe to be our greatest display of football in the five in a row era. Neill Sheehy gave a fantastic display. The game ended a draw 3-5 for South Kerry 1-11 for Mitchel’s. We won the replay in the Austin Stack Park by 4 points. On that Mitchel’s team we had great footballers like Teddy O Dowd, Brendan Galvan, John Dalton, John (Thorney) O Shea and Dom O Donnell to name but a few”.

(Q): What did you bring to the team as Captain in 1961?

(A): “I was always a very positive person. I tried to lead by example and to do my best for my team mates”.

(Q): What other sports have you played?

(A): “I was involved in athletics with John Mitchel’s Athletics Club from the age of 16 until I was 20. I won the 100 yards sprint at the Kerry County Games for three consecutive years 1952-54. In 1954 I also won the senior title on the same day for the 100 yards. This record still stands I believe”.

(Q): What has been your biggest disappointment as a Mitchel’s player/supporter?

(A): “For me it was the match against South Kerry in the 1964 Championship season. In that game we never got going – we were very flat, very lethargic. It was so unlike our team and the following season we were knocked out of the Championship beaten by a single point by Mid-Kerry. It was disappointing but the team went on to win the 1966 Championship”.

(Q): Tell me about training methods in your time as a player?

(A): “Jacques Mc Donald philosophy was fitness he was also very tactical. He was a great motivator and totally dedicated to the John Mitchel’s. He trained nine County Championship winning teams”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the Club

(A): “I am very optimistic about the future given our wonderful facilities. There is a level of pride instilled in the club. I hope this will give motivation to all our players. I look forward to the Club playing at the top level of football in the County again. I wish everybody involved in John Mitchel’s Club the very best of luck for the future”.
