Questions & Answers
Session with
Robert O Dowd

Profile: Robert O Dowd,
Manager John Mitchel’s Junior Team
John Mitchel’s Senior Player From/To: 1982 – 1990
Player Position: Left Half Back
Honors Won: Under 21 County Championship Title 1983

(Q): What has been one of your greatest accomplishment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A): “For me it was winning the Under 21 County Championship title in 1983. It was also an accomplishment to get to the senior County Final in 1989. Unfortunately we were unsuccessful on the day”.

(Q): Tell me about the 1983 U21 County Championship win?
(A): “We had great players on the team. To name but a few we had Frank and Jim O Donnell. Jim was our team captain. Other players that stood out on the day were Rory Kilgallen our keeper, Pat White and Tim Leahy. It was a great squad effort not just one to fifteen. Going into that final Spa Killarney were favorites to win. But we had great team spirit and I believe that got us over the line in the end”.

(Q): Which player(s)/people in the club would you have looked up to?
(A): “My brother Tim was a player I looked up to. He went on to win three All Ireland Titles with Kerry. Denis Fitzgerald, Michael (Fox) O’Connor and Ber Kerins were great players. The person I believe everyone looked up to was Sylvie Mason. He gave great encouragement and guidance to all the young players. Sylvie was a great Mitchel’s man”.

(Q): Can you tell me what is satisfying to you about your sport?
(A): “John Mitchel’s GAA club is in our blood. For me this tradition goes back to my father’s time as a player.
It is not just a Club, John Mitchel’s is a family. It becomes part of your daily living. Most weeks you’re helping to prepare and organising training sessions and weekends the playing of matches”.

(Q): If you could change a rule in Gaelic football what would you change?
(A): “I would limit the number of hand passes that a team can give. After three or four hand passes a player should then have to kick pass. Over use of the hand pass is ruining the game. It’s great to keep possession of the ball but hand passing about with no movement forward is overkill”.

(Q): What other sports have you been involved in?
(A): “In secondary school I played badminton. I played basketball with the Stabbers club. The Higgins family in particular Pat and John had a lot to do with that. We were very much a Boherbee outfit. I also was involved in Athletics with Clounalour AC. I joined the club when it was formed in the early 1980s. Francis Quill was our mentor and he guided the Club at underage level”.

(Q): What was training like in your time as a player compared to today?
(A): “It was totally different. The warm up in my time was ten laps of the pitch. Then some stretching and a game of backs and forwards. Training was hard, there was a lot of running especially at the start of the season. Unlike today we had very little ball work throughout the session”.

(Q): Can you tell me something of your role as Manager of the Junior team?
(A): “We have a great bunch of lads playing on the Junior team. Sometimes as Manager it can be a bit challenging to field teams for matches. Especially with players who have commitments with the Senior team which obviously comes first. Players have lives outside of football and it is hard to juggle between training, games and the risk of injury. The junior team is important as it keeps everyone involved in playing football. For myself I totally enjoy it. There is great satisfaction in it”.

(Q): What advice would you give to encourage more people to get involved with coaching in John Mitchel’s club?
(A): “Given the facilities we now have, people shouldn’t need too much encouragement. There is something here for everyone from coaching to administration. Any person thinking of joining a GAA Club should come and view our Complex here at Camp Ballyseedy. But above all it is more than a club it’s a family and everyone is welcome. I would like to mention when I was sick a few years ago the Club rallied around me. This gave me great encouragement and I thank all the members and supporters in the club for this”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the Club?
(A): “It was hard for many of our older members when we moved to Camp Ballyseedy. We have a very proud tradition in Champers Club grounds. The decision was of course the correct one. Going forward I believe we have a great future. The complex here is a great amenity for Club, Town and County. As a Club I believe we will achieve great success in the future as we have in the past”.
