SENIOR TEAM – JOHN MITCHELS v SPA (AWAY)
Mitchels met Spa today in the County Football League Division 2 play off in Brosna.
Mitchels won the toss and played with the aid of a strong wind in the first half.
Mitchels were the first to score with a Shane O’Connor point followed by two points from frees from Spa. Mitchels scored a further five points in a purple patch from scores by James Duggan and Niall Sheehy leaving the score 0-06 to 0-02 coming up to half time. Spa scored a vital goal and point followed by two points from Mitchels leaving the half time score Mitchels 0-08 Spa 1-03.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Alan O’Donoghue scored a point from a free followed by a well taken goal from James Duggan leaving the score 1-09 to Spa 1-03. With the wind in the second half Spa scored a succession of points leaving Mitchels ahead 1-10 Spa 1-06.
With the wind behind them Spa continued to launch attack after attack which ended in the game being level Mitchels 1-10 Spa 1-10.
Mitchels opened the first period of extra time playing against the wind and traded points with Spa. Spa scored a point at the end of the first half of extra time giving a one point lead to Spa leaving the score Mitchels 1-12 Spa 1-13.
With the wind in the second half of extra time, Mitchels scored a point in less than a minute followed by two further points giving them a commanding two point lead with fourminutes left to play. Spa fought back with two further points levelling the game giving a final score Mitchels 1-15 Spa 1-15.
