John Mitchels played Round 9 of the Co League against Austin Stacks last Sunday evening at home. The throw in was at 2.00 p.m. and Stacks played with a strong wind in the first half.

Stacks were first to get on the score board with a point from play from David Mannix. Mitchels followed up with a 45 from Niall Sheehy and a converted free from Alan O’Donoghue.

Stacks replied with 2 points from David Mannix one from a free and one from play. Alan O’Donoghue scored a further 2 points one from play and one from a free. Stacks hit a purple patch with Shane O’Callaghan scoring 1-01 from play followed by a 45 from Wayne Guthrie leaving the half time score Stacks 1-05, Mitchels 0-04.

Stacks were first off the mark with a point from play in the 2nd half from David Mannix giving Stacks a 5 point lead. Mitchels reduced the margin by 2 points with scores from Alan O’Donoghue and Wayne Duggan.

Jack Morgan put Stacks ahead again by a 4 point lead with a point from play. Mitchels dug deep scoring 4 points in a row with two points each from Shane O’Connor and Alan O’Donoghue. This levelled the game with both sides giving their all.

Stacks forged ahead again with points from play from Conor Jordan and Jack O’Shea. Mitchels replied with a point from play leaving a minimum between the teams.

The final whistle blew on the kick out leaving the final score Stacks 1-09, Mitchels 0-11. Mitchels went in as under dogs to this match and could easily have got a draw out of the game due to the outstanding performance they gave against a more fancied team.

JUVENILE BLITZ:
On Saturday last 23th of July, for the 16th consecutive year we held our annual juvenile football tournament for the U-8 & U-10 age groups. Once again this football blitz was an outstanding success with 24 teams enjoying a great day of football.

We had 12 teams at both u-8 and u-10 age groups, these teams were John Mitchels, Austin Stacks, Na Gaeil, Castleisland Desmonds, Churchill, Ballymacelligott, Kerins O’Rahilly’s, Ardfert, Milltown/Castlemaine, Keel, St. Pats and Beale. In all over 500 players enjoyed a fantastic day of football and with over sixty games of football played we had many stars of the future on show.

Thanks to all the teams and team mentors who took part on the day. Thanks also to all the referees who volunteered on the day and made sure that once again this tournament was an outstanding success.
