CLUB. PROFILE: Ted Fitzgerald. Club President

Senior John Mitchel’s player from 1962 – 1971
Honours won Club & County:
John Mitchels
3 Senior County Championship Titles.
Kerry
All-Ireland Junior Title: 1
Munster U-21Title: 1
All-Ireland U-21 Title: 1
Munster Minor Title: 1
All-Ireland Minor Title: 1
Playing position: Right Half Back

(Q)What has been one of your greatest accomplishment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A)”My greatest accomplishment was playing on three Senior County title winning teams”.

(Q)What would you consider to be one of your “best” games as a player?
(A) “I believe one of my best games as a player was in the County Final of 1966 which made it all the better as we won and I got a run with the County team in the National League”.

(Q)Which players in the club would you have looked up to?
(A) “When I came in towards the end of the 5 in-a-row era 1962/63 we would have looked up to the likes of Fred Lynch and Sean Óg Sheehy ”.

(Q)What is satisfying about your sport?
(A) “For me it was great to be playing with John Mitchel’s, playing with a club which had great success competing for County titles. Also I made some great friends along the way”.

(Q)What has been one of your greatest disappointments?
(A) “One of my greatest disappointments I suppose was as a supporter in
1989 when we lost the County Championship final, we had a very good team.
Unfortunately we didn’t do ourselves justice in the final”.

(Q) What other sports have you been involved in?
(A) “I was involved in athletics at school with CBS (The Green) we won
the Munster Colleges 4×100 relay title and went on to win the Bronze medal in the
All Ireland College’s final”.

(Q) What was training like in your time as a player?
(A) “Jack Mc Donald was our trainer and in terms of training methods was before his time similar to today’s training. He was also a great motivator and because of this everyone put a lot of effort in and of course he brought success at minor and senior level”.

(Q) What was the most challenging thing for you as a Mitchel’s player?
(A) It was very competitive for places on the Mitchel’s team proper, a number of teams from Mitchel’s/Boherbee area competed in a district league and from those teams the John Mitchel’s senior team was picked”.

(Q) What are your thoughts on the present and future of the club?
(A) “For me it was a bit lonesome when we left Champers, but we simply couldn’t cater for all our teams with just one pitch which was a setback to future development, our facility here in Champ Ballyseedy is a credit for all who worked very hard to make it a reality, it’s a facility not just for Mitchel’s teams but for the youth of the town and no doubt will contribute to the future success of all our teams.
I am sure like all John Mitchel’s supporters I would like to see the senior team competing at the highest level again and I wish them the best of luck for the season.
I am delighted to be the John Mitchel’s Club President, over the years I have held various positions in the club including Club Chairman and I have always enjoyed working on behalf of the club and will continue to do so”.
