John Mitchels 1-06 Ballymac 1-15.
An under strength team gave it everything against a stronger Ballymac side in this Castleisland District. Round 4 match. Ryan Ward (0-4) and Shane Doyle (1-0) contributed hugely to the performance and score with Gavin O’Brien (0-1), Conor O’Brien(0-1) rounding off the scores. Michael Kelliher was excellent in goals making some brilliant saves and Mark Ryle was the best of the backs with some great tackling and tracking. Questions & Answers Session
Profile:
Name: Eoiny Kelliher
Works as: Financial Planning Partner Irish Life
Senior John Mitchel’s player from/to: 1991 – 2009
Favourite playing position: Full Forward.

(Q): What was one of your best games as a Mitchel’s player?
(A) “I believe one of my best games was in the 1994 County Championship, we played away to West Kerry and they were favourites to win the match and had several key players like Darragh Ó’Shea & Darragh Ó Cinnéide I was 17 at the time, the match finished in a draw and I played well on the day”.

(Q): What was one of your worst games?
(A) “I suppose it was a game against Austin Stacks in which we lost and it was one that sticks out for me because it was a match to stave off regulation”.

(Q): What was one of your biggest disappointments as a Mitchel’s player?
(A) “When we lost our Senior status and were relegated to the Intermediate Championship which was hard to take for all the players, supporters and for the Club given our long running tradition and success at Senior Championship level. Another disappointment was the fact that a lot of the people I played with at under age level didn’t go on to play senior football and that was particularly disappointing as the club lost some very good players that left for whatever reason.

(Q): What has been your greatest accomplishments as a Mitchel’s player?
(A) “The greatest accomplishment for me was playing as a Senior player for so long, 18 years in all and to play for a great club”.

(Q): Who has been the most influential person for you when you became a Senior player?
(A) “The player I would have looked up to and was influential to me was John Higgins. I looked to him as did a lot of the younger players as a mentor and he was great to give advice and support. John Joe Sheehy and Anthony Gleeson were of great help to me also. My dad Johnny Kelleher and my uncle Jer Power gave me my love of football from a very young age.

(Q): What other sports do or have you played?
(A) “I played golf, soccer, snooker and racquet ball, I still play soccer on a regular basis”.

(Q): What is something that is unique about your sport?
(A) “Gaelic football and GAA sports in general are unique in the fact that the club and its members and supporters spring from the local community and the particular area where their club is based. This gives all involved a great feeling of belonging where lifelong friendships are made.

(Q): What has changed in the way teams are trained and the way the game is played?
(A) “The game today is very technical. Players have to adapt to certain situations depending on the opposition and tactics vary from game to game, training in particular is much different since I was a player it is much more tactical and professionally orientated”.

(Q): What motivated you in your sport?
(A) “The motivation came from the fact we had a successful team from under age level all the way to minors, I always wanted to do well for the team to be there for the team and was always motivated by the supporters and the club I am part of”.

(Q): If you could change one rule in your sport what would that be?
(A) “I would not so much change a rule but bring in a rule were a player could call for a mark for fielding a ball in the air from a kick out, nowadays players are usually pulled to ground when they try to catch a ball in mid-air, I would like to see them call for the mark and get a free kick as a result”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the club?
(A) “As a club we are in a very exciting place. We have great facilities and there is some great work been done by the club officers and management across all areas so hopefully we will see it come to fruition in the coming years. Personally I am involved with the senior team as a selector and we have the basis of a young team that we hope will go on to win the intermediate championship and restore our rightful place in the senior county championship. If a club has success at senior level than the effects of this will reverberate across all teams in the club”.
