The girls had a good win away to Currow in Round 5 of the County League on Tuesday evening last. After a slow start they picked off some lovely scores to go in at halftime with a comfortable lead – the highlight of the half was a super one handed save from our goalkeeper Tara Field. The girls got into their stride early in the second half and a few quick scores put the game beyond their opponents and they saw the game out well.

The girls that played last week were as follows;Tara Field,Caoimhe Leahy, Elizabeth O Connor,Taylor Rogers, Eimear Murphy, Erica O Connor, Kerry Oba, Lauren Smullen, Katie Ross, Angel Quilligan, Molly Brosnan,Lynda O Connor,Emma O’Donnell, Ciara Kerins,Emily O Shea, Dawn McLarnan & Simera Hunt.

SUNDAY MORNING CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE

U-10 BOYS:
We had a great morning’s football in Na Gael on Sunday morning June 14th. The level of skill and commitment showed by all our players was wonderful to see. We played as a team and although there were a number of players at the Kerry game we showed a great attitude and worked hard for each other. Everyone gave it their all and the quality of scoring was superb. When we did not have the ball we tackled well and caused a lot of turnovers. Well done to all the lads and keep it up it is a pleasure to watch you play.

Last Sunday June 21st we played Beaufort at home. With 2 teams performing well. Andrew, Ciaran and Sean tackled and played extremely well. Sam, Darragh and Joe showed great skill also and took some great scores. Brian, Paddy, Rory and Cian showed why we are a talented team. Jack and the rest of the lads played very well and all looks good for the future. Well done boys.

Questions & Answers
Session With
George O’Donnell

Profile: George O Donnell
Referee John Mitchel’s Club
Selector St. Brendan’s Board Senior Team

(Q): As a Juvenile player what was your greatest accomplishment?
(A): “It was great to be part of a team with your friends. Our team got to the U15 Championship final in 1991 but lost out to Laune Rangers. We won the U16 County final in 1992”.

(Q): Which Mentors/managers would you have looked up to as a Juvenile player?
(A): “Frank O Donnell, Tommy Sweeney, Karl Keohane and Denis Buckley to name but a few. They were the coaches that I trained and played under. They are all very good Mitchels people”.

(Q): What was one of your biggest disappointments as a Mitchel’s player/supporter?
(A): “I tore my cruciate ligament in a U16 game in Tarbert. This was a great disappointment to me as I didn’t get back playing until my last year at Minor level”.

(Q): What is the most satisfying thing about Gaelic football to you?
(A): “The most satisfying thing for me was the people that I’ve got to know and became good friends with. Many members of my family are also involved with the Club as players and mentors”.

(Q): If you could change a rule in Gaelic football what would that be?
(A): “I would change the pick up rule in the boys/men’s game. This rule slows the game considerably. Many players are picking it straight off the ground away and referees can’t always see this. I would change the rule so that players can pick it off the ground like in Ladies football”.

(Q): What other sports have you been involved in?
(A): “I played soccer and basketball but Gaelic football has always been my main sport”.

(Q): What was training and preparation for games like when you were a player?
(A): “The warm up before games wouldn’t have been as intensive as it is now. Training was almost all ball handling and kick passing that sort of thing. There wasn’t a great emphasis on stretching. Training was thorough it was quick and spritely”.

(Q): As a Referee what is the most challenging aspect of the game for you?
(A): “The most challenging aspect is how those on the side line interpret the rules.
Managers/mentors and parents alike can be very cynical towards referees.
The most important thing is to protect the players and explain to them what they are doing wrong. I also believe referees should let the game flow and to be fair at all times”.

(Q): What advice would you give to encourage more people to get involved in juvenile football?
(A): It has always been a great experience for me and very worthwhile. It’s great to see the players that you have coached go on to play at senior level. I would say to anyone wishing to get involved to grab it with both hands”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the Club?
(A): “Everything is going well at this present time. We have great numbers at Juvenile level.
We have had a number of successes to date in all levels in different competitions. Our Senior ladies won Div3 County League and are promoted to Div2 for next season. Our Senior men are doing well and have reached the Semi-final of the Intermediate Championship. We have good people at the club and there is great support for all the teams”.
