County League Division 2
We played Templenoe in the first match of the Co League last Sunday. Mitchels started well and had three points on the board Alan O’Donoghue (2) and Sean Moloney (1). Templenoe came back into it scoring three points in a row and levelling the match. In that period we were thankful to Dermot Raggett our goalkeeper for making two brilliant saves. Points from Shane O’Connor, Stevie Mahoney and two points from Sean Moloney brought the half time score Mitchels 7 points, Templenoe 3 points.

In the 2nd half, Templenoe started very strongly and scored three unanswered points leaving only one point between the teams. Mitchels dug deep and responded by scoring three points in a row, one each from Alan O’Donoghue, Sean Moloney and Ciaran Deane giving a final score

Questions & Answers Session
Profile
Name: Joe Myers.

Senior John Mitchel’s player from/to: 1978 – 1987

Playing position: Full Back

(Q): What has been one of your greatest accomplishment as a Mitchel’s player?
(A) “For me it was my time as Captain of the team that won the Town Championship in a match against Kerins O’Rahilly’s in 1984”.

(Q): What would you consider to be one of your “best” games as a player?
(A) “The game that sticks in my mind I believe was 1980 in division 1 of the league, we won the match against Austin Stacks and all the team played very well on the day”.

(Q): Which players in the club would you have looked up to?
(A) “When I came on to the senior panel I was 17, the player I would have looked up to most was Seanie Burrows. Seanie was a big influence on myself and all of the young players. Players like Billy Miles and Pat Costello also had an influence”.

(Q): Can you tell me what is satisfying about your sport?
(A) “Gaelic football for me is the best sport in the world.
It is a great spectacle when it’s played well.
As a team sport the friends you make along the way are friends for life”.

(Q): What is something that is unique about your sport?
(A) “It’s great that it is unique to Ireland and that we have such a great tradition of Gaelic football in Kerry. It is also great to see the young people continuing to uphold this tradition”.

(Q): What other sports have you been involved in?
(A) “I have to say that I didn’t have too much interest in other sports. I played some Soccer, Badminton and Golf”.

(Q): What was training like in your time as a player?
(A) “Training today is much harder, with our training sessions there was more emphasis on running building stamina especially at the start of the year. Today training is more sprinting, core excise, weight training and diet plays an important role”.

(Q): What was the most challenging thing for you as a Mitchel’s player?
(A) “I suppose as any player you had to try your best to stop your immediate opponent. On a wider scale just trying to encourage other players and for myself playing the best I could”.

(Q): Can you tell me about your time as a manager/mentor of juvenile teams?
(A) “As a mentor of juvenile teams over the years it is always very satisfying to see some of the young people I coached go on to become senior players”.

(Q): What are your thoughts on the present and future of the club?
(A) “At present everything is geared towards getting as many young members as possible and rightly so. The future looks great for the club we have marvelous facilities and great credit is due to all involved. As a club everyone has to keep working hard to ensure success”.
