A NEW course at Kerry College of Further Education is gathering such interest that they will have to add a second class this week.

Garda Aidan O’Mahony and his colleagues were in the KCFE Clash Campus for their inaugural session with the Pre-Garda Studies Students on Monday.

This programme is aimed at those who wish to apply to pursue a career with the Gardai Siochana, and the Tralee Division have agreed to provide support to KCFE students to ensure the learner will gain a real life insight to what it takes to be a member of the Garda Siochana and the diversification of roles and range of specialisms within the force.

Principal Mary Lucey confirmed on Monday that the course has had such a take up that they have to add on another class and are taking more applications which must be submitted by this Thursday. You can apply by clicking here.

“Students at times are attracted to the glamorous side of the career portrayed by the media and do not fully realise the depth of the role,” said Mary Lucey.

“By completing this programme, the learner will not only have a knowledge of Criminal Law, Business Law, Legal Practice and Procedures, Health & Safety, Criminology, Conflict Resolution, but will have completed sessions with members of the force and will have visited the Garda College in Templemore and more. They will be in a very advantageous position if they are suitably qualified to apply for Garda College in Templemore,” said Ms Lucey.

The Kerry Garda Division will provide a number of presentations, and collaborate in the organisation for a trip to Templemore Garda College.

Community Sergeant Eileen O’Sullivan has been instrumental in facilitating this service and Community Garda Aidan O’Mahony will be involved in providing a real-life insight for students on what it is really like to be a member of the Garda Siochana.

The aim of this programme, is that when Kerry College of Further Education Pre-Garda students graduate, they will be ideal candidates to apply and progress to the Garda Colleges for successful completion of the Garda Training Programme, subject to meeting the relevant qualification criteria.
