10k Run :

A fine bright spring morning brought the crowds to Strand Road on Sunday to participate in the 5/10k run in honour of the late Tom Begley.

There was a great atmosphere as the 300+ people gathered before the 11.00 o’clock start, with many families present to savour the occasion.

It was delightful to hear the cúpla focal ring out as the event was well supported by Tom’s many friends from back west.

We would like to thank everyone who took part, to Bomber and David for presenting the medals and the hard working committee who helped to make this such an enjoyable event.

Victory Social:

Our upcoming victory social on Sat night 4th March in Ballyroe Hotel  has now been fully booked out and a waiting list for tickets has been created.

The event sold out in record time, not surprising given the great support the team has enjoyed throughout the year.

For those lucky enough to have procured tickets, we will be in touch with you regarding collection/payment etc over the coming weeks – there will be further updates on social media in due course.

Seniors:

David Moran announced his intercounty retirement on Monday last,  bringing the curtain down on a fifteen year Kerry career that ended with 3 Celtic crosses.

David made 53 championship appearances for Kerry scoring 1-23 whilst racking up 58 league appearances and amassing 3-41 in total. He played in 9 Munster senior finals culminating in a 100% win record.

David was highly lauded by a myriad of journalists & commentators following the announcement,  with a recurring theme highlighting his high fielding, resilience to come back from two cruciate injuries, plus his exemplary conduct on the field of play.

We wish David the best of luck in his future endeavours and look forward to seeing him in the blue and white of Strand Road over the coming years.

Kerry

Micheal Quirke was on media duties as Kerry took on Donegal in Ballybofey on Sunday in the first defence of their title.

The inclement weather with strong wind and rain was to Kerry’s backs in the first half but after building up a six point lead, 1-06 to 0-03 Kerry lost their way from there to half time, failing to score and conceding a further 3 points.

The second half was nip and tuck all the way and the game seemed to be heading for a draw until Donegal captain, Paddy McBrearty scored the winning point in the 74th minute.

Monaghan are next up for the Kingdom next week in Fitzgerald Stadium where throw-in is @ 1.30 pm – Monaghan are also pointless, having lost their opening game to Armagh on a scoreline of 1-14 to 1-12.

Limerick, with Mark Fitzgerald as part of their management team, made the long journey to Owenbeg on Sat in their opening national league game and came away empty handed against the Ulster champions and last years All Ireland semi finalists; Derry look to have targeted a place in Division 1 for next year and proved much too good on the day for the newly promoted side.

Schools

Mercy Mounthawk exited this year’s Corn Uí Mhuiri when losing out on a final scoreline of 2-16 to 0-13 to St Brendans, Killarney on Sat. Mounthawk were probably the better side in the first half but a defensive lapse just before half time saw them concede a soft goal and they were 4 points adrift at the break.

The second half saw them halve the deficit at 1-09 to 0-10 points but a scoring spurt by St Brendans when scoring 1-05 without reply put the game to bed.

Tomás Kennedy, though wearing 14, lined out at midfield and can be happy with his day’s work while a forward line oft times starved of ball, saw Darragh O’Connor point from play in the first half. Cian Moran and Jake Hoare were also part of the squad.

Kerry U-20s received a bye to this year’s Munster semi final when the draw was made over the weekend; Kerry will play the winners of Tipperary/Clare on Easter Monday, April 10th with the final fixed for April 24th.

Maurice Horan & Co will have their charges in action on the weekend of the 10th Feb when they play Kildare in the John Kerins trophy with a fixture against Dublin yet to be announced.
