Happy young men in Strand Road last Sunday after Kerins O’ Rahilly’s victory over Crokes in Rd. 4 of the Senior Co. League

Division 1 County League Round 4

Kerins O Rahillys  1-11

Dr Crokes 0-11

Dr Crokes visited Strand Road on Sunday afternoon for round 4 of the Division 1 County League.

Played in perfect conditions in front of a good crowd the home team got off to a quick start from the throw in with a fisted point from Gavin O Brien following a strong run.

The visitors then replied with two points of their own , and shortly after Conor Hayes levelled matters with a point from play.

In the tenth minute we took the lead again with another Gavin O Brien point. Barry John Keane kicked a close in free following a foul on Tommy Walsh.

The Killarney side still looked threatening and kept in touch right through the half.
The would turn out to be the decisive score came in the eighteenth minute when Barry John Keane palmed the ball to the net after a driving run from Gavin O Brien who offloaded to Conor Hayes, Hayes’s shot for goal coming off the upright , and Barry John was on hand to finish to give us a two point lead.

Barry John soon added two further frees to stretch our lead. Conor Hayes kicked a good score after great work in the build up from Cormac Coffey and Tom Hoare. Again the Crokes we’re keeping in touch with a few scores of their own.

The final score of the half came from the boot of Barry John Keane , who kicked a fine score from an acute angle following another surging run from O’Brien.

This left us ahead at the break on a score line of 1-08 to 0-07. Dr Crokes , now playing against a slight breeze into the ESB end ,opened the scoring in the second half . After thirteen minutes we responded with two points from the influential Barry John Keane, both scores coming from well taken marks.

Both teams then went through an error laden patch, with some very scrappy play and a lot of unforced errors, particularly from the hosts. During this period we really should have extended our lead more, but credit to the visitors , they never left us get too comfortable.

We lost Tommy Walsh through injury mid way through the half and this seemed to stifle the focus of our attack, indeed we were to only score once more following this, despite having numerous chances.

Shane Foley in goals once again proved his worth with a number of top class stops.
The last score of the contest came from Conor Hayes from close in who received a pass following a sixty meter run through the heart of the Crokes defence from Gavin O Brien.

At the final whistle we ran out winners by three points, however we did squander a lot of opportunities to widen the winning margin and have put the result to bed a lot earlier. Top performers on the day were Shane Foley in goal, Stephen Nix, Ross O Callaghan and Cormac Coffey in defence, also worth mentioning young TJ Heaphy acquitted himself very well throughout.

At midfield Tom Hoare worked tirelessly , while upfront Gavin O Brien fielded a number of kick outs while scoring and assisting the inside line, Barry John Keane and Conor Hayes also put in a great hour and we’re our main danger men.

So it was a good win , and gave up two valuable points ,that sets us up nicely ahead of next weekend’s fixture against Gneeveguilla.

U12 GIRLS
So many attributes… working together, leadership skills, hand passing, great movement… a great bunch of young girls.
You have only been training a few weeks but as each week goes by we can see the difference in your skills… great interest by each and every one of you. Keep up the good work!

STRAND ROAD BLUES

KERINS O’ RAHILLY TEAM

Kerins O’ Rahilly’s U12s turn their jerseys inside out as they were host to Ballymac who also wear blue in the North Kerry League

We had a slight hiccup and had a later throw in time  than expected last Wednesday v Ballymac… only a small blip!

It was a bitter cold evening on Ballyrickard’s juvenile pitch , we got off to a very strong start with one of our youngest Lexi Keane putting up the first score.

The next 20 minutes saw an array of goals and points for us from naturals Taylor Kate Leane and  Lexi,  Lily Mae Bowler who is getting better with each game, bubbly Kelly Hayes and Allie Kerins who is one also to be watched in the future!

Aisling Donnelly made some great blocks during the game.  Niamh Lynch made a lovely pass to Aoibhinn  Corridon who sent the ball down the line to Taylor Kate who scored a point.

Our captain on the day, Emma Onyekwere as always had great skills on display with her graceful soloing up and down the line. Kelly Hayes scored a super point after a great pass from Lily Hussey.

In the second half , Sophie Constable won the throw in ,passing  to Allie Kerins who passed to Lily Bowler who scored a lovely point.

Working well in defence, breaking ball and making life difficult for the Ballymac attackers were Ruby Foley who fought for every ball, Rachael Ahern likewise.

Olivia Crean was outstanding, out in front every time and had a great game also. Sennait in goals had very accurate kick outs.

Great team work by each player .

Hard Luck to the girls from Ballymac who lost but did their club and each other proud! An unbelievable bunch of girls who never gave up. These ladies will no doubt make  big strides for their club in the future.

In round 5 we play Na Gaeil next Wednesday, April 27th. The game will commence at 6.15p.m. in Na Gaeil pitch. Best of luck to you!

Delighted to have Darren Horan, Stoves 4U on board as sponsor of Kerins O’ Rahilly’s U14 jerseys . Last Tuesday, Darren called to us in Strand Road to officially launch them. We were joined by Declan Quill, joint KLGFA manager who brought the National League Cup, division 2 with him. Thank you!

Kerins O’ Rahilly’s U14s who did themselves proud against a tough opposition Rathmore in the NCP Co. League last Sunday

NCP CO. LEAGUE v RATHMORE
DIVISION 2, RD. 1 BACK GAME
This game should have been played on March 13th but due to a pitch inspection that morning the pitch was deemed unplayable…..so here we go…..
Sixth league match of the season for our U14s on a bright, breezy afternoon in Pat Healy Park , Ballyrickard.

The pace was high, the competition Rathmore was fierce and our ladies gave it everything they had against a tough opposition. The girls did themselves proud and gave a performance that shows lots of promise for the rest of the year. Well done to everyone!

For our final round of the NCP Co. league we are away to our neighbours across town, Na Gaeil in two weeks time.

FÉILE
John West are sponsors of the annual Féile Peil na nÓG and Féile na nGael competitions .
Féile has grown to become one of the biggest underage sporting events in Europe.

Throughout its sponsorship, John West has focused on the importance nutrition plays in fuelling young athletes, whilst encouraging children to play in Gaelic games.

Last year the U15 age group was introduced to ensure that children who missed out in 2020 due to the pandemic got a chance to compete in 2021.

Kerins O’ Rahilly’s U15 ladies are looking forward to being a part of this wonderful competition which will take place on the bank holiday Monday in May. Generations in our club before you have thoroughly enjoyed this competition .. both girls and boys teams.
Best of luck to everyone. Venue etc. TBC.

U16 GIRLS
Our U16s have no competitive games until the start of May.
Last Thursday we hosted a team from over the bridge in Killorglin who have similar colours to ours.

Thank God for the hint of pink on our jerseys now so there was no need to turn our jerseys inside out.

Laune Rangers have produced many a good Kerry footballer including our coach Liam Hassett… aren’t we lucky that Liam married a Tralee woman and settled here .

We started strong getting a few quick scores and our young ladies even grew more in confidence as the game went on. We were low on numbers on the night so we borrowed a Laune Rangers player.

The second half continued in the same form and scores exchanged each way in a free flowing game. At the end of an entertaining game we came away the winning team. Many thanks to Laune Rangers players, management and  supporters for travelling in for the game.

We must bear in mind that this game wasn’t about winning. It was a fun game and so enjoyable to watch the girls from Killorglin join us during the game and also when Fiadh McCarthy had to come off injured. A special mention for Taylor Stack who showed great determination  and is getting more confident in each game she plays.

MINOR LADIES
The minors have a break until the start of May also. In round 4 of the Co. League we host Scartaglin. More details to follow.

Kerins O’ Rahilly’s Seniors are back to their winning ways when they defeated Beale in the Donal Curtin Cup last week. Great performance by all!

SENIOR LADIES
Back to winning ways …The performance of the week probably belongs to our senior ladies who played Beale in round 3 of the Donal Curtin Cup last Thursday… a strong performance from all!

Great to see our Leaving Certs taking time out from their studying to play and also to our college students who are busy preparing for their end of year exams and assignments. We’re delighted to welcome back Lauren Scannell who took a break for a while…. still remember Lauren at U10 .

COMMUNITY
Gaelic football is bigger than just what happens on the pitch. It’s also about community who might not necessarily be players and club members. Gaelic football extends  out to the social interaction and the health and well-being of everyone and is at the core of all activity.  We in Strand Road serve our community!
Keep an eye on our club notes over the next few weeks….

REFEREE COURSE
Unfortunately the KLGFA referee course organised for last weekend had to be cancelled…. What a pity!  With the growth in popularity of Gaelic football for both females and males , the demand for the much needed match official, the referee is increasing. The referee as we all know is a very important cog of the wheel to ensuring that all games take place.
