Senior Football

Castleisland Mart Senior Club Championship Kerins O’Rahillys 1-13 Legion 1-14 A great second half display by Legion gave them the narrowest of wins in this absorbing Club tie played at the Strand Road grounds on Saturday night in ideal conditions. This game had everything with outstanding displays by both sides and football at a premium.

A draw would have been a fair result but Legion came from 5 points down with 15 minutes left and with the introduction of Kerry star James O’Donoghue in the second half he was a major contributor in their win shooting over 4 great points and a thorn in the side of Kerins O’Rahillys defence.

Kerins O’Rahillys dominated the first half with David Moran outstanding at mid field and points by Jack Savage (4) Barry John Keane (4) and Tommy Walsh they led at half time by Kerins O’Rahillys 0-09 to Legions 0-05 Legions points coming from David O Sullivan, Billy Maguire, Denis Sheehan and Conor Keane.

Kerins O’ Rahillys were unlucky for a goal in this half when Cormac Coffey’s shot blazed wide. Legion introduced James O Donoghue at half time and they got a dream start in a well worked move that saw Conor Keane finish to the net leaving a point between the sides 1-05 to Kerins O’Rahillys 0-09. But Kerins O’Rahillys fought back and a Tommy Walsh point and a great goal by Barry John Keane put them ahead by 1-10 10 to Legions 1-06 at the 40th minute.

A Jack Savage point made it 1-11 to Legions 1-6 at the 41st minute. But Legion thundered into the game and with Jonathan Lyne, Jamie O Sullivan, Shaun Keane, Podge O’Connor they rattled off a series of points from Jamie O Sullivan, Jonathan Lyne, and 2 great points from O’Donoghue to leave 3 between the sides and 10 minutes left.

Conor Keane narrowed the gap and James O’Donoghue equalised with time nearly up. Kerins O’Rahillys last two points coming from John O’Connor and Tommy Walsh. In injury time both sides tried for the winner but it was Legion got that all important point to claim a memorable win.

U12 Boys Training U12 Boys training will take place in Healy Park Ballyrickard on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 5.30 to 6.30pm. The U12 boys were beaten in the Lee Strand Co League Division 2A on Sunday last by a stronger John Mitchels side. The final score was Kerins O’Rahillys 3-05 John Mitchels 5-06. Unfortunately there was no Division 2B game as John Mitchels were unable to field a team.

U14 Boys Report from last weeks Beaufort game – We were well beaten in Round 2 of the County League by a much stronger Beaufort side. We played with the breeze in the first half and lead 1-07 to 0-06 at half time thanks to a goal and a point from Graham O’Carroll and points from Conor Hayes(3) Conor O Sullivan(2) and Darragh Fitzgerald(1).

The second half was a different story as a much more physical Beaufort side took command and ran out easy winners in the end on a scoreline of 5-14 to 2-08,our only scores in the second half coming from Conor Hayes and a well taken goal from Kieran O’Brien.

A feature of this game were two injuries to Gavin Burrows and Ben Foley who were both playing well when they had to come off which upset our game plan. To their credit both players returned to the field and played on to the end which shows the spirit we have in the team.

U14 Feile – The Feile took place in John Mitchels ground last Saturday and we played four short games in all. Our first game v Mitchels was a tight affair with the home side winning by two points in the end 0-06 to 1-01.

The second game was v Ardfert and we just won this one on a scoreline of 2-05 to 2-04.Our final game in the group was against a very strong Listowel side who ran out easy winners 3-05 to 1-02.This left us in a playoff for second place in the group v John Mitchels.

This was a short ten minute game which we lost 0-03 to 0-02 but can feel very unlucky as a few calls made against us were debatable to say the least. Scores on the day came from Conor Hayes 2-04 ,Darragh Fitzgerald 0-06 ,Gavin Burrows 1-0 and Conor O Sullivan 1-0.
We had a great turnout on the day and all players can feel proud that they gave their all for the club and as a team we will only get better with the experience we have learned from this. A special thanks to the parents who provided transport and indeed help on the day.

Congratulations to the Dowling family. Their Sports and Shoe shops celebrated their 60th anniversary last week. The shops have become an intuition in the town. Lots of photos were taken throughout the morning with members of the public calling in to wish the family continued success.
