Senior Football

Tralee District Championship Final Kerins O’Rahillys 1-09 Austin Stacks 1-14

We played old rivals Austin Stacks in the Town Championship final under lights at Austin Stack Park in ideal conditions for football. Austin Stacks had a great start and whipped over several points in the space of ten minutes. We had plenty of possession in the first quarter but the Rock backs dominated.

A goal in the 20th minute had them well ahead but fair play to Strand Road who gave a great response with points by Jack Savage, David McLoughlin and a great point from debutante Tommy Walsh who dominated the middle and showed he still retains the skills that made him a star before going to Australia. Points by Barry John Keane and Sean Walsh left the half time score at Kerins O’Rahillys 0-05 to Austin Stacks 1-07.

The second half saw both sides with a good share of possession but Stacks overall play and the fact that they are in an All Ireland semi final was clearly evident as they combined well to put over vital scores.

We had our opening point from Barry John Keane and further points from Barry John kept us in the game. Both sides used up a lot of subs which was a good workout for both managers.

Stacks led by 1-14 to 0-08 with 5 minutes to go. Declan Quill blazed over the bar and a great individual goal by Barry John Keane left the final score at Kerins O’Rahillys 1-09 to Austin Stacks 1-14. Best of luck to Austin Stacks in the All Ireland semi final. A good workout for Strand Road and with the return of players from abroad and home the management have plenty to work with.
