Senior Football
Garvey’s Super Valu Co Championship Rnd 3 Kerins O’Rahillys 3-12 Killarney Legion 2-12

We qualified for the quarter final of the Garvey’s Co. Championship with a well deserved victory over Legion played in damp conditions at Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney last Sunday afternoon.

This was a great team performance and it was only in the last ten minutes that Legion threatened and gave supporters palpitations when they bagged two goals to narrow the gap. Kerins O’Rahillys completely dominated the first half with David Moran dominating mid field ably assisted by John C O’Connor.

Points by Jack Savage, Barry John Keane, Tommy Walsh and a Jack Savage pointed free had us ahead by 4 points to Legions no score at the 6th minute.

In the 9th minute Barry John Keane billowed the Legion net from close range and further points from Jack Savage (2) John Ferguson and David Moran had us ahead by 1-08 to Legions 0-01 at the 19th minute and the team firing on all cylinders. We had a great chance of a second goal in the 25th minute but the ball went well wide.

Barry John Keane had the last point of the half to leave the half time score at Kerins O’Rahillys 1-09  to Legions   0-03 . The second half saw Strand Road again dominate with the backline of Danny O’Sullivan, Giles O’Grady and Shane Brosnan rock solid and David Mc Loughlin, Ross O’Callaghan and Andrew Thompson setting up the attacks and Tommy Walsh fielding good possession.

Points by Barry John Keane (2), Jack Savage (1) increased our lead to Kerins O’Rahillys 1-12 to Legions 0-04 at the 40th minute. A great run by Barry John Keane who set up John Ferguson who palmed to the net to leave us ahead by 2-12 to Legions 0-05 at the 45th minute and the game looked over for the Legion.

A similar move straight after when Barry John drew the backline and slotted over a great ball for John Ferguson to finish for his second goal leaving us ahead by 3-12 to Legions 0-08 at the 52nd minute.

But Legion responded by putting over 3 points and a goal to leave the scores at the 58th minute Kerins O’Rahillys 3-12 to Legions 1-11. Another point at the 60th minute left it at Kerins O’Rahillys 3-12 to Legions 1-12 and when they got their second goal 4 minutes into injury time alarm bells started to ring but we held onto a deserved win and look forward now to the quarter final draw.

Gary Kissane had a fine game in goals, the backs had a great hour and others to impress were Greg O Connell, Kieran O’Mahony, Kevin Walshe, Gavin O’Brien when introduced. We wish John Ferguson a speedy recovery from the nasty head wound he got during the game. Congratulations to Kevin Walshe who got married on Friday to Sinéad. Next game is on Sunday next in the Co League. We play Dingle in Dingle ay2pm.
