Senior Town Championship Semi-final Replay

Kerins O’Rahillys 1-09

John Mitchels 0-07

Due to the unavailability of the John Mitchels pitch, the replay of the town board semi final went ahead on Sunday in Strand Rd throwing in at 12.30. Our team was notable for the inclusion of Danny O’Sullivan and Con Barrett, both returning after long absences and good to see them back in action.

As one would expect in the first game of the season for both sides and on a heavy pitch, good football was at a premium. However, once we settled and with our inside line of Kieran O’Mahony, the afore mentioned Con and Ronan Quill threatening we led by 4 points to one at half time with all our scores from play, Kieran O’Mahony contributing 3 and Danny O’Sullivan up supporting his forwards popping over the other score. At the back, David Murphy and Robert O’Shea were excelling and keeping their opponents on a tight leash.

On the resumption, John Mitchels, who now had the wind at their backs piled on the pressure but it was Strand Rd who had the first score when David McLoughlin pointed. From here until the finish, John Mitchels took the game to our lads and were only 2 points in arrears entering the final 10 minutes. They kicked the final 2 scores to leave the teams level on 6 points apiece and again extra time was needed.

The first period produced much endeavour from both sides but only one score, that coming via a sweet strike from John O’Connor at the short whistle. The final 10 mins saw us put the game to bed, when, first David McLoughlin pointed following a good run from Tommy Begley and then a Con Barrett goal sealed the win on a scoreline of 1-9 to 0-7.

Outstanding on the day were defenders David Murphy, Robert O’Shea & Tommy Begley while up front Kieran O’Mahony, scorer of 5 points from play, Ronan Quill and Con Barrett caught the eye.

We now play Austin Stacks in the final next Sunday 25th January in Ballymacelligott at 2 pm.
