Francis Quill and Haulie Kerins launch the Kerins O’Rahillys 10k/5k Race with club members.

Kerins O’Rahillys’ fifth annual 10km/5km run and walk will commence at 11am on Sunday, 27th of January next.

The run/walk was launched on Saturday last and honours Francis Quille, who’s involvement with Kerins O’Rahillys juveniles spanned a 36-year period to 2012.

He began training teams with the late Christy Griffin in 1976 and in addition to his involvement with teams from U8s to U16s, “Francie” went on to serve as Chairman,Secretary and PRO of Kerins O’Rahillys juveniles.

Francie pioneered and was chief organizer of juvenile team trips to other clubs and the destinations varied from counties in Leinster, to clubs in Galway and Clare, as well as numerous trips to Bishopstown and other Cork clubs.

Early highlights for Francie were winning Kerins O’Rahillys’ first juvenile Co. Championships in 1978 and 1981 with U12 and U14 teams and the Minor and U21 championship wins in 2006 and 2015 book-ended the latter part of Francie’s tenure.

Other notable successes were the four Co. Minor and four Diivision 1 Senior Co. Leagues won during Francie’s involvement.  When after a 45-year break, Kerins O’Rahillys won the Senior Co. Championship in 2002, it was achieved by players that had all benefited from Francie’s knowledge and nurturing at juvenile level.

It was also of huge satisfaction to Francie to see players he had coached make it to Kerry Senior level.  Noel O Mahony, Morgan Nix, Ken Savage, Barry and Morgan O Shea, Micheal Quirke, Declan Quille,Tommy and Barry John Walsh, David Moran, Barry John Keane, Jack Savage and Cormac Coffey all started their football careers under Francie’s guidance.

Speaking at the launch, Club Chairman, Haulie Kerins said that “such has been his immense lifelong contribution to our juvenile club, it is a huge privilege for Kerins O’Rahillys to honour a club legend, Francie Quille, in this year’s run.  He did his work for us efficiently and quietly, without ever looking for any recognition and it’s only right and fitting that we acknowledge his significant work by dedicating this year’s run to his honour.  The Quilles are a huge Kerins O’Rahillys family.  All Francie’s own children togged out for us and his grandchildren are now carrying on this proud family tradition.  We thank Francie for his knowledge, time, commitment and dedication and wish both He and Carmel a long, happy and healthy retirement.  The10km run is an important fundraiser for us and we hope to have a huge participation on Sunday, 27th of January next to honour Francie”.
