The creme de la crème of Kerry badminton travelled to Tipperary last weekend to take on the finest Munster had to offer. The Brewster is a prestigious competition that has been running since 1951 and it is a whole 16 years since the Kingdom last brought the cup over the county bounds.

This year four counties took part and first up for the Kerry team was Waterford. The Kingdom accounted for the Deise County 9-0 and after accounting for the home County Tipperary 8-1 in their second game Kerry were all set to take on Cork in a straight shoot-out for the title.

Cork took the first Men’s Doubles in two sets but Kerry got back on track with Edel Kenny (Kingdom) and Elaine Hudson (Moyvane) winning the first ladies contest 21-17, 21-17. Through Paddy Redmond (Listowel) and Alan Nelligan (Kingdom) Kerry took the second Men’s Doubles 21-10, 21-13 but the scores were level at 2-2 after Cork won the second ladies doubles.

Tom Bourke (Kingdom) put Kerry back in the driving seat with a comprehensive 21-8, 21-8 win in the Men’s singles and a thrilling ladies singles contest was to follow. Kerry’s Sinead Galvin took the first set 22-20 but was unfortunately was eventually beaten in three sets by Trish Herlihy of Cork.

At 3-3 it was all still to play for going into the three mixed doubles. Jennifer Keane (Killarney) and Tom Bourke were beaten in the first mixed but it was 4-4 when Elaine Hudson and Alan Nelligan won the second mixed 21-3, 21-7.

It was all down to the final mixed game and that heavy burden of responsibility was on the shoulders of Fergal Hannon (Listowel) and Ruth Concannon (Kingdom). The Kerry pair put up a spirited effort but unfortunately in the end the Cork pairing of Chris Quill and Kate O Mahony proved too strong winning 21-14, 21-12 meaning Cork retained the title.
