It’s been a busy fortnight for Kerry Badminton culminating in the Lee Strand sponsored Mixed Doubles tournament held in Killarney’s Aura on Sunday the 24th of November.  Masters, Seniors and Juveniles were all in action and silverware was brought back to Kerry.

First up on Sunday the 17th of November the Kerry Senior team travelled to Dunmanway to contest the Butterfield cup against teams from Cork and Tipperary.

Having both beaten Tipperary, Cork and Kerry faced off in a winner takes all match.  Unfortunately for the green and gold, Cork came out the stronger and won the title with Kerry securing the runner up spot.

Saturday the 23rd of November saw the juveniles descend on Killarney for the first Kerry tournament of the season.  Winners from the day were:

U10 Girls

Nicole Vesko (Listowel) & Irene Carol (Listowel)

U10 Boys

Mikey O’Connor (Moyvane) & Liam O’Connor (Castleisland)

U12 Girls

Kate Nolan (Listowel) & Aine Newsome (Annascaul)

It was the adults’ turn on Sunday the 24th for the mixed tournament.  Fantastic entries from the division 5 men meant that there was a play off to see who would compete in the mixed section.  From over 40 entries Aine Knightly (Annascaul) and her partner Lorcan Briscoe (Ballybunion) emerged as the winners.

The division 4 final was an exciting three setter which saw Aoife Bowler (Moyvane) and Mike O’Shea (Killarney) claim victory 21-16 in the third.

In division 3, the much coveted Waterstone Cup, the honours went to Breda Flavin (Moyvane) and Timmy Hanrahan (Kingdom). The last final of the day decided the division 1/2 title and it went to Michelle Beazley and Aaron Tan both from Kingdom club.

Special mention to the Kerry Chairman Tom Burke who travelled to Dublin to compete in the Leinster Masters Open tournament and came home with a silver in both singles and men’s doubles.

All roads lead back to Killarney again next Sunday for the Kerry Knock-out cup, see you there!
